The fan fiction lovers among you will be familiar with the term “cross over”. Today’s shrine is one such thing – a piece of fan fiction art which draws from two works of fiction. The hint is in the name. But before I present this little piece of fiction, let me tell you that this was a particularly satisfying shrine project for me. Not just because it combines two particularly well-loved chaRActers, but because of the reason I made it.
A while ago I received a message from our fellow friend Circusgifs on tumblr. You probably know her name because she has often appeared in my Weekly Armitage Round-ups with her fabulous gifs. (Her latest one made me laugh so much.) She said “On XXX there will be the birthday of a friend, Pollysthings & I thought that she might like one of your RAPS. We have a thing, Pollysthings & me, with Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde but replaced by Thornton & Thorin (or as I like to call him, Master Thorinton) So do you think you would be able to make & send something to her?” This was an irresistible commission and I immediately jumped at it. Not only because Circusgifs had made it pretty easy for me to find inspiRAtion for a shrine with her keywords Master Thorinton and Jekyll/Hyde, but more so because I love playing fan-on-fan Cupid. There is something extremely gratifying in creating something that will be given as a gift – not from me, but from someone else. It may contain my creativity, but it carries the message of friendship and care from someone else to the recipient. I take a lot of pleasure from that. In this case even more so because I have communicated with both Circusgifs and Pollysthings BTS and therefore felt I “knew” both of them. Is that what is called “empathy”? However, I’d like to emphasize here that I am open to such requests any time – for entirely selfish reasons, of course. Doesn’t matter whether I know requester and recipient or not – it just makes me feel good creating something that is the tangible expression of friendship and appreciation.
So, with Circusgifs’ stipulated Master Thorinton theme in mind, I created this:
There’s a bit of Circusgifs on the cover of the RAPS – her brilliant RArmy coat of arms. It felt fitting to incorporate that into the shrine.
Inside I took up Circusgifs’ Jekyll/Hyde explanation as a starting point.
Split personality? That leaves the question who is the master by day and the master by night? And thank cod for the famous smoulder pose that RA has perfected, the slightly tilted-down face with the fierce look – Thorin and Thornton fitted together perfectly! (I somewhere have a picture to prove it even better…)
Difficult to see, but the little red book is entitled “Master Thorinton”. It also contains a tiny little message from Circusgifs to Pollysthings. Finding images where “Master Thorinton” looks directly *at* the viewer are few and far between, particularly when it comes to Mr Thornton. The official promo shots are the solution. Luckily they make both Thorin and Thornton look quite assertive – he demands to be the “Master of Your Heart”. The red heart is a magnet, btw, and when it is removed, Mr Thornton comes off and reveals Thorin. So Pollysthings can adapt her RAPS according to her preferences of the minute 😉
So there we are. Fandom love at its finest. Thank you to Circusgifs for involving me, and happy birthday to Pollysthings. If you feel like it, give both of them your love and attention – their tumblr blogs are worth visiting as they both exclusively/frequently post Armitage!
And if you have a particular friend in the fandom whom you want to surprise with a gift or whom you want to show that you care, my inbox is always open! I am sure we can out suss some sort of “exchange” – I am open to all suggestions, and if push comes to shove, it is always more valuable to me to put the fruits of my labour into the service of fan-relations than to receive personal gain. My shrine fairies behind the scenes continuously replenish the stash of material and they have expressly stipulated that I am also to make some shrines for free, too, so that *anyone*, regardless of their own financial situation, can afford one. PS: It’s *that* time of year. Yes, the Crucible anniversary! And what I call “The Summer of Love”. It seems so long ago, somehow… And yet time has passed quickly when it comes to my other anniversary which will come up for the first time on Friday. For the latter reason I am heading home to Germany tomorrow, for a few days. I’ll probably not have the opportunity to post the round-up as I’ll be travelling back on Saturday. But I might be able to post late. Just so you know that I am not going through another fandom-related crisis if I am silent over the next few days ❤

Ja, da hat er doch gleich den Grundstein gelegt. Vielleicht sogar schon früher, als “smug man at a party” LOL. Wer hätte je gedacht, dass man auf einem brennend heißen Blick eine ganze Karriere aufbauen kann. Okok, bevor ich hier jetzt wieder Duellforderungen bekommen: Er hat das Ganze ja dann auch noch mit Talent und Zielstrebigkeit unterfüttert. Alles gut.

Oh, good point – the struggle between dark and light, yes. Although I couldn’t even say how represents dark and who represents light in this one. Bit of both?

Wonderful in every way 🙂 What an inspired idea by circusgifs and what a great realisation! Love the fur background on one side and the yellow roses on the other 😉 And being able to remove the heart and find Thorin inside Thornton is so clever!

Every new shrine you make is such a(n) unique piece of creativity (I envy you 🙂 ) Mr Thornton and Thorin, I´m just speechless…
And now you take the step to crossover, I can´t imagine how many new possibilities open up for your shrine making, is anybody good in maths?
Have a save travel home, we have very bad weather these days (11° C and nonstop raining), though from Wednesday it will brigten up (hopefully).

Hehe, *you* are person who is used to working with numbers – work it out? How many chaRActers are there in total? About 27? So squared, we are talking 729 possible combinations? *eeeeeek* That’s gonna last me into retirement, judging the pace I am going at this time, and not even counting new chaRActers that will emerge over time. Well, this could become a full-time position. If you all chip in together, you might be able to create a job for me 😉
Ugh, really hope the weather is going to pick up for my short trip. We’ve been having nice, mild and sunny weather over here, and I would hate to swap that for “Schietwetter” (shite weather). We’ll see.

Der Mann mit den 2 Gesichtern! Das hast Du super umgesetzt – dass man die Bilder unten austauschen kann, clevere Idee! Und irgendwie steckt auch was Wahres drin, in fast jeder seiner Figuren schlummert eine gehörige Portion Gewalttätigkeit, sogar in Mr.Thornton. Ob das in der Realität auch so ist? Das Faible für die “dark roles” und die Hinwendung zum “habt Euch alle lieb”?
Aber bestimmt schlummern diese beiden Seiten in jedem von uns…..zuviel Nachdenken am Montagmorgen 🙂

Jou, irgendwie ist das alles sehr menschlich, diese Dichotomie zwischen Gut und Böse, oder irgendwie entgegengesetzten Eigenschaften.
Stimmt, diese Gewalttätigkeit ist immer latent vorhanden. Vielleicht nicht gerade bei Harry Kennedy, aber selbst das Lämmchen Standring wurde ja zum reißenden Tiger, als sich der Konkurrent in sein Revier wagte. Nach eigener Auskunft hat das ja bei Armitage selber auch System: Abreagieren an der gewalttätigen Rolle, um im RL ausgeglichen und friedlich zu sein. Ich finde, das macht schon Sinn.
Juhu, dann hoffentlich Mittwoch schon mit Frühstück auf der Terrasse. Auf sowas freue ich mich bei meinen Deutschland-Besuchen immer besonders.

Das kleine Buch ist klasse, und das Magnet-Herz muss so groß sein, dass es für beide reicht. 😉
Übrigens beweist der RAPS, dass ein gewisser Zwerg zu breit ist, um sich hinter einem menschlichen Mann zu verstecken. (Bilder lügen nicht! Miau.) 😛

Hehe, wo du immer alles Mickey Mouse Ohren siehst. (Ich konstatiere da ein geradezu besessenes Assoziationsmuster bei dir 😉 ) Irgendwie war mir beim Planen meines Foto-Shoots die Symbolik einer Maske als Hintergrund für einen Jekyll/Hyde-Schrein auch noch klarer als jetzt… ups.
Das Herzchen ist ungefähr einen Zentimeter groß – und ja, auch stark genug, dass es zwei Fotopapierlagen halten kann. (Das ist bei den Wortmagneten nicht der Fall.)
Das Crucible-Jubi war mir (leider) durchaus bewusst – leider, weil es sich nun doch ein bisschen mit meinem persönlich nicht so schönen Juni 2015 vermischt hat. Die Dramen haben in der Tat leider etwas davon abgelenkt, denn ich hatte mich trotz allem schon darauf gefreut, dass jetzt möglicherweise noch mal ein Schwung wieder hochgeholter schöner Erinnerungen durch das Fandom rauschen würden. Schade, eigentlich. Denn andererseits thematisiert doch TC auch die Gefahr von Missinterpretation von Worten und stellt auf eindrucksvolle Weise klar, wie wir uns willkürlich oder unwillkürlich mit unseren Worten (Namen?) definieren. Naja…
Ich hoffe auch, dass die Erinnerungen nicht nur moros ausfallen werden. Bei mir ja sowieso nicht – aber ich spüre da einen deutlichen Erwartungsdruck, dass ich weinen muss und soll, und das passt mir überhaupt nicht… Mal sehen, ich bin ja GSD nicht allein.

Gar nicht, ich bin völlig unschuldig! Merry hat das Bild im großen ersten Schrein mit den Mickey-Ohren in Zusammanhang gebracht, und ich hatte das zufällig vorther gelesen – Kunststück, dann hier auch Ohren zu sehen … 😀
Maske passt übrigens sehr gut zum Thema, auch wenn du nicht weißt, wie du dazu auch noch was schreiben solltest/könntest. Kann sich halt jeder selbst was zu denken. Völlig okay, finde ich. 🙂
Was den Erwartungsdruck beim Besuch daheim angeht: Wenn ich ganz offen und drastisch sprechen darf? Pfeif drauf, was “erwartet” wird. Deine Gefühle – deine Reaktion. Die Art, *wie* (oder ob) du etwas zeigst, sagt nichts darüber aus, was du fühlst oder wie intensiv du es empfindest.
Ich hoffe, du hast deswegen nicht zusätzlichen Stress, weil halt dies und das die “normale” Reaktion ist.

Love the idea of tearing the two faces in half. The whole thing is amazing. Crossovers could keep you the the shrine business for quite a while. All those possible combinations. The fur/flower background was really cute, too. Hope you have good weather for your trip and don’t leave it behind in Ireland.
