Have you read Obscura’s post on “OversatuRAtion” today? I have to confess here that I am also what she terms as a heRAtic – in my case a fan who felt a bit unable to keep up with the many pictures, tweets, reports, videos and commentaries that came in over the weekend. I can’t even find a proper explanation for it – it’s not that I don’t want to see tweets about RA or that I am tired of looking at him. Never! 😀 I think what it does to me is remind me that it is impossible (for me, in my specific family/living/working situation) to keep track of *everything*, and ultimately, for me, that is an unpleasant realization. And so, to avoid disappointment, I simply zone out of the whole thing, only dipping in and out of it, focussing on the stuff that *I* find noteworthy, neglecting the bigger picture, safe in the knowledge that others will summarize, document and formulate responses.

However, that leaves time to do other things, and the one thing that Armitage has been doing to for me without fail, is tickle my creative bone. I am not really sure how that works – is it feeling inspired by his example, which shows an extraordinarily prolific output this year alone (Hannibal, Pilgrimage, Brain on Fire, Summer, Clearance, plus misc. voice work)? Is it feeling challenged á la “You’re not that special, Armitage, if *you* can do it, so can I”? That’s the version for the arrogant Scorpio who put his/her hand up twice when god handed out self-confidence… Is it a subconscious move away from him, an attempt at doing something “active” rather than passive consumption, proving that I *can* do other things apart from spending 20 minutes watching Richard Armitage breathe like in the Anglophile Hannibal Pannibal Fannibal video – I’m not kidding, that’s what I did while Fuller and Dancy droned on… It was enormously entertaining and exciting to watch the belly under that tight, white t-shirt move up and down, up and down, up and down. At the end of the clip, I was in a trance. I like to think it is a mixture of my own creative urge and his good example.

So over the weekend I got this irrepressible urge to make something. Not a shrine (for that I need an empty house, and Mr Guylty is obviously in da house on Sat and Sun), but something else. This coincided nicely with a small dilemma that I am facing. You see, I am going on a business trip tomorrow. I’ve mentioned before that Guylty is a rather careless, if not slovenly dresser with a seriously challenged fashion sense. If it’s black and comfy, I’ll wear it. I am not altogether averse to dressing up on occasion, but I am a firm believer in Thoreau’s adage Mistrust all enterprises that require new clothes. That aphorism is actually carved in wood on top of my wardrobe. No kidding. But we are talking a business trip here, not a photography gig where I could pretend I was a slightly dotty artist who is too aloof to care about appearances. Some kind souls gave me a few pointers on what to wear when on business. So Guylty went shopping and bought four tops, one pair of pants, one jacket. Guess what? Four out of six garments are black *arrrrrgh*, and I had been advised to lighten up my style, especially as I am *not* attending the annual conference of the National Association of Funeral Directors, but meeting professionals from the digital sector. So, accessorize! With the Red Dragon indelibly burnt in my mind (that trailer… UNF), I went to work.

Crapes for the Red Silver Dragon? So the Funeral Director’s bash after all? Nope. That’s just the centrepiece around which I created a brooch to be worn proudly and brashly on my otherwise sad and sorry outfit. I made a brooch for my lapel, reminiscent of a medal – or possibly more like a rosette.

Quite blingy for Guylty’s standards. And in order to not neglect dear old Dolly in the whole shebang, I included a reference to probably *the* favourite scene in Red Dragon in this lousy effort at classy bling. Maybe you can spot it better in the next pic.

Maybe not. That silver blob underneath the rosette is a tiger’s head. Yeah, reminiscent of good ole romantic Dolly taking Reba on an unforgettable trip to the zoo to “see” a tiger. Awww, the fangirl heart crumbles… Me, over-romanticizing a vicious, schizophrenic serial killer? Of course not. Um.

Do you think that is a goer for a sideline in RAPS Inc.’s product portfolio? I can already hear the marketing dept rustling their notes and sharpening their pencils. Under the heading of “Stealthy Fangirling for Professionals – Wear Your Heart on Your Lapel” they’ll be extolling the “discreet elegance of a piece of RAvotionalia that is set to keep your heart racing – while appearing smart and professional” with a “quirky, custom-made piece of costume jewelry” that “allows you to carry your favourite chaRActer with you at all times, without attracting snarky questions from pitiable ignorami”… Damn, they already had me at “stealthy fangirling”… Let’s hope I won’t have to field any snarky questions on my trip. Wish me luck!

    and knowing everything is overrated. not that I have experience with this, mind you, I’m just assuming 😀

  2. I think it’s beautiful and a definite go for the RAPS line!

    I too became quickly over-whelmed. I don’t really DO Twitter, but my dash was overrun and my email notifications were off the charts AND I was trying to write. (Roland’s current escape is complete. One more chapter and that will be it for Roland!!!!) I resorted to my normal behavior when this happens – my TBR folder in my email (to be read) got a healthy deposit and as is my wont I go in and read one or two here and there… sooooo….)

    • Well, I am glad to hear that, Zee. So the weekend had a similar effect on you as on me. I better go check up on Nemo on DF. Really looking forward to Roland – he’s great. And I am looking forward to Edward, too, even though you make him sound really obnoxious. He couldn’t be, could he? He’s Guy’s incarnation!!

    Was für eine perfekte Proudukterweitertung. Warum nicht jetzt mal in Richtung Modeschmuck? Bijou Guylty. Hättest du auch Ideen für die anderen Rollen? Kleines Schwert am Revers (Raymond/Thorin/Guy) oder kleines Schäfchen für Standring? Wie wäre es mit dem Speedo-Zeichen für diesen *du weißt schon wen* und für Thornton würde ich eine Träne im Knopfloch tragen.

    • Das sind schon mal wunderbare Ideen, CraMERRY!! Könnte sich alles so umsetzen lassen – muss nur mal nachgucken, was der Materialschrank so hergibt. Ich hätte ja an meinem Red Dragon noch lieber eine Tube Zahnpasta und eine Filmrolle befestigt, aber leider lag mir das nicht vor…

  4. I’m from New York, where black is the new black, the old black and the always black. Now and then I livened it up with gray – and I’m a big fan of white shirts and tops. LOL. ( It’s a little different for me here in Mexico where, by necessity, I’ve started to wear colors, but during my first year, you could spot me a mile away. Love the accessory.

    • I just love black, too – it combines with everything 😀 It’s dead easy for me to get dressed in the morning. Plus, it is almost like photographers’ uniform (no inadvertant glare or reflection), so very practical, too. However, I sometimes wonder whether my all black outfits have an influence on my mood… funereal 😉

  6. I love your new creation. I wore a silver crocodile pendant at the Con because that was the closest thing to a dragon I had. They are both reptiles, right? I received a lot of compliments on it, and it was my secret tribute to RA. Maybe I should have worn a flower crown with a tiger on it. Nahhhhh, not subtle enough.

    • You know what – I love the secret tribute aspect of things. How objects can receive a new meaning, even just secretly, without anyone knowing, making things exciting. Reptiles are really not my cup of tea at all, but when it comes to RA, I would forget my principles very easily 😉

  7. I love it!!! certainly has pizazz! And does liven up that very classy outfit a bit 😉 I love the textured top by the way, nothing like a great material :-))) It looks like a lot of fun and that dragon looks very playful with the lace , hmmmm (says the innocent who hasn’t watched a thing and can still enjoy it unencumbered 😉 )

    And i can definitely see potential in the new product line! AND this can be worn closer to the heart ;-))
    (still the thought creeps in on me of those teeth chomping on your exposed throat… eeeeek! .. see this is why i am absolutely in panic of knowing more!)
    Can wait for people to ogle your great accessory and wonder why? how?? 😀

      • i denke nicht, ich kenn die Serie und das Buch und irgendwie ist FD schlimmer als alle anderen, Verger ist einfach OTT und die Schweine kann ich nicht ernst nehmen, ist einfach zu bekloppt. H sehen wir meist essen, so ekelig es ist und es gab ein paar Messerwunden aber wir sehen ihn eigentlich nicht morden, und der tut es eher kalt und kalkuliert und nicht animalistisch… FD ist einfach das Bose als Biest, und ich furchte den werden wir tatsachlich morden sehen mit allem was dazu gehort. Ich weiss nicht ob ich nicht nachher das Bild nicht mehr loswerde und keinem anderen Charakter mehr Glauben schenken kann wenn ich ihn mal so ent-menscht und bose gesehen habe.. seufz. Ist doof denn ich habe mir alle eps angesehen bisher und sogar das Problem mit der Zensur die ich mit denen hab habe ich nicht klar ausgedruckt eben um mir selber ein Lochhen frei zu lassen um seine Eps zu sehen.. und jetzt wo es naher kommt will ich mich davor verstecken… seufz.

          • ja, ich taste mich langsam ran… ich versuch es mir ja auch selber zu erklaren was mir so Angst macht in anbetracht dessen dass ich die olle Serie ja ganz gesehen hab bisher… vielleicht muss ich nur jedesmal nach H mit R ein Epi von North and South gucken :-p da war DAS Kontrastprogramm 😉 (nicht der grosse Fan von N&S) 😉

            • Das klingt nach einem guten Plan. Das ganze dann noch komplementiert mit Dauerbildschirmschoner Proctor, gelegentlichen Abendabstechern ans Old Vic zum Reminiszieren, und gaaaaanz viel Fanfiction a la Guy. Wäre doch gelacht, wenn man das nicht in den Griff kriegen könnte!!!

        • Oh, ich merke an mir, dass ich die Mördertour von Dolly ziemlich ausgeblendet habe. Hm. Mal sehen. Du hast sicher Recht, dass wir das Morden in epischer Breite serviert bekommen. Da war die letzte Szene im Trailer schon der erste Hinweis, ohne dir jetzt was vorwegnehmen zu wollen. (Zudem es da noch keine Mordszenen als solche gab – da kannst du beruhigt reingucken.) Ich weiß nicht, aber vielleicht kannst du es ja genau wie ich machen, und dich auf die Madness konzentrieren, oder darauf, dass es eben den Unterschied zwischen Dolarhyde und Red Dragon gibt. Deswegen sehe ich da noch einen Unterschied bzw. finde dass Dolly nicht das Böse personifiziert ist, sondern nur das willenlose Werkzeug des Red Dragon (der ist eher das Böse).
          Das mit der Identifikation des Schauspielers mit der Rolle dagegen findet natürlich nur in *deinem* Kopf statt, da kann ich dir natürlich nicht beistehen. Aber ich habe nach Genuss des Trailers den ganz starken Eindruck, dass RA sowohl Dolly als auch Red Dragon sowoh physiognomisch als auch physisch so komplett anders als sich selbst ausdrückt und charakterisiert, dass du keine Probleme haben wirst, da zu differenzieren. Es ist erstaunlich, wie anders er da rüberkommt.

          • mich hat gestern oder vorgestern oder so was beruhigt was er gesagt hat in dem Pressewirbel. Sie haben ihn gefragt ob er sich die ekeligen Szenen angesehen hat oder sonst und er hat ganz klar nein gesagt, er hatte nur das eine mitbekommen wo er direkt mitmachen musste aber alles andere nicht. Und von seinen ahnungslosen Antworten ist auch klar dass er sich die Serie is heute noch immer nicht angeguckt hat 🙂 Ich musste echt lachen, der hat einen genauso empfindlichen Magen wie wir 😉 Und er kann es ja nicht offen sagen aber fur mich sagt die Tatsache dass er sich das nicht angesehen hat viel uber ihn als Person, er steht offensichtlich nicht auf Genre und findet es auch zu ekelig fur sich selber um es zu geniessen ;-)) Soviel Zeitmangel hat auch er nicht um es nicht gucken zu konnen wenn er wirklioch wollte oder Lust hatte. Ich kann aber auch sehen wie man seinen Teil spielen kann und das andere ignorieren, er hat ja auch nicht gesagt Mann schaut euch das an, ist es nicht toll, das und jenes mit Beispiele 😉 Weil er einfach die Details nicht kennt 😉 Das hat mich massiv beruhigt 🙂 Ich muss nur immer dran denken wenn mich die Panik uberrennt 😉 Und an dem Typen am SD denken der mir so sanft ‘bless you’ zugesausalt hat 😉 Ist nur im Augenblick alles viel auf einmal, zu viel! 😉

            • Ich finde das persönlich auch sehr sympathisch – und auch sehr pragmatisch von ihm. Selbst wenn er die Mörderszenen spielen muss – das ist, glaube ich, wirklich meistens schon eher komisch, wenn man weiß, dass man da gerade mit Ketschup rumspritzt… Obwohl – er als Method Man?? Wie auch immer, das Ganze ist ein Job, und keine Lebensphilosophie. Bei aller Empathie und Method-Acterei – ich glaube, er kann sehr wohl unterscheiden zwischen Realität und Spiel. Ich finds persönlich ok, dass er nicht auf Horror steht, aber da mitspielt – Job ist Job. Ich habe mich auch schon mal für meine Arbeit mental prostituiert…

              • total, da kann ich nachvollziehen, jeder muss mal und arbeiten muss jeder und die Arbeit an sich kann interessant sein. Gehirnlich und nicht eierstockmassig habe ich mehr Probleme damit dass ich mir das Zeug von Leuten ansehen die zugelassen haben das man Botticelli zensiert und das ist ein Schuldgefuhl womit ich viel schwerer leben kann, dass ich das fur RA nicht akzeptiere aber nicht so von mir wegweise wie ich es eigentlich machen sollte 😦 Ubrigens habe ich zuerst den Post von Oscura als ‘ovulated’ anstelle von ‘oveRAted’ gelesen.. Hilfe, Richard du bist nicht gut fur mein Gemut!

                  • ja, seltsam wie angenehm man sich im gutetr fuhlt.. grrr an mich selber! Ich wollte sogar einen wilden Post von wegen Zensur und der olle Fuller schreiben aber dann habe ich gedacht eingentlich muss ich dann die Show abschworen,…, das ist definitiv der schwerste Post .. und so blieb er ungeschrieben zu meiner Schande, vielleicht tu ich es doch noch und gebe meine Schwache einfach zu, schliesslich hatten die die show wahrscheinlich noch schneller abgeschafft wenn sie sich mehr gewahrt hatte, trotztdem es ist Botticelli!!!!! uufff bloody Richard… and my honour in shreds..

                    • Nö, ich finde nicht, dass du dann die Show nicht mehr hättest sehen können. Ich bin mir nämlich nicht sicher, ob die Zensur der Botticelli-Brüste auf Fullers Mist gewachsen sind – könnte doch auch von der ausstrahlenden Senderkette herkommen, die das von ihm verlangen. Nö, musst du nicht boykottieren. .Es reicht doch schon, wenn du darauf hinweist.

                    • naturlich nicht Fuller 🙂 wurde ich ihm auch nicht unterstellen, der ist zu kultiviert und zu kreativ um sowas selber zu machen, NBC ganz sicher, aber ich kann es ihnen nicht verzeihen dass sie es akzeptiert haben, Fuller inklusive, er muss doch besser wissen. Und das macht es schwer sein Werk zu sehen wenn er so eine Entstellung durchgehen lasst, Ist ja sowieso absurd, aber ich kann verstehen dass man live Busen von Leuten versteckt und keine Genitalien usw zeigt, ist da halt so, aber ein Werk der Weltkultur entstellen? Mann es macht mich wieder so total wutend nur dran zu denken 😦 Ich war auch ziemlich enttauschet dass keiner auf meine diskrete Frage reagiert hat, nicht mal mit einem dezenten, sorry we had no choice oder so 😦 Na ja, der Post muss anscheinend noch raus weil es noch immer in mir hochkocht… 😉

            • Habe die Interviews noch nicht gesehen, danke für die Info, die finde ich für das Gesamtbild nicht unwichtig. Offensichtlich kann er Job vom Film bzw. Serie komplett trennen, finde ich gut. Man muss nicht aus jeder Rolle ein Lebenswerk machen. Und bei Dolly glaube ich immer noch es hat einfach Riesenspaß gemacht sich mal in dieser Richtung auszuleben und BÖSE zu sein 🙂
              Momentan habe ich eher das Gefühl da kommt eine ganze Menge neues auf uns zu….. ich sollte doch jetzt mal irgendwann die Interviews gucken 🙂

    • Well, you are going to get to see the Red Dragon close up, Hari! (*hehe* a dubitable honour, but well…)The textured top was H&M, 20 €. The lace under the dragon comes from your stash, btw! So there is a bit of you in this…
      Ha, teeth chomping my throat – ah no, Dolly would never do that to me. I would make him tame and sane with my love, and care, and careful amateur psychology 😉
      You know, I doubt it’ll draw any curiosity. I have a couple of pieces of jewelry that *always* draw comment, both laser cuts. One is a small black plastic cassette tape – a conversation starter with men, interestingly. The other my dangly earrings in silver plastic in the shape of North and South Island. Also always gets comments.

But I love your new accessory idea, which must surely become THE accessory range of the year 😉 Look forward to your thoughts on what icon might represent each chaRActer 😉 The only thing that comes to mind offhand for Lucas is a doughnut, which isn’t very elegant… Ditto mobile phone. John Thornton… A pineapple? 😀 No, it might have to be a yellow rose… Thorin could be a key…

  11. Good luck with your biz trip Guylty! I’m rootin’ for you. I lucked into some extra time to look at blogs ‘n stuff when I was crowded out by a huge group at the airport and refused to push my way pass two very old women trying to help each other get to the checkout counter at Alaska Airlines. I’m unhappy to have missed my flight. I actually didn’t miss it, they just wouldn’t let me get on the plane when they were due to push back from the runway within 30 min. I tried to get on anyway, but didn’t make a scene, just politely asked if they would please please please let me. But they did not. So now I can think of more pleasant things, like your business traveling attire.

    Have I ever mentioned that black is my favorite color? It cleans up easily, one can wear it working and still look professional, I add a tie and like men’s button down shirts better than women’s because they usually come with a breast pocket I can put pens and iphone into? However, I don’t dislike other colors, it is more about trying to stay clean while working for me. I wore a pink shirt with purple tie and Hobbit Key tie pin on my panel at CCI Sunday and I am wearing a white shirt with a black tie and superman tie pin. The problem with white shirts is they tend to get dirty so fast, but it was the last clean shirt I had and I had already ironed it, so wear it I am. 😀 Now I do wear t-shirts (as some might notice if they see or follow me on twitter this week) especially when girlfriends have provided me with t-shirts with their comic book art on them. But I have been extra careful to try and not get them dirty, couldn’t help the perspiration, but that is easily washed out in comparison to ink, grease, or marker stains. I am no expert in fashion, that would be my mother, some of my sisters and friends. What I have gleaned from them is that I can dress up some of my bland work clothing. I mostly dress the same daily because I am not able to coordinate, colors or much else due to the fact that when my equally fashion clueless viking-sized hub asks if I really plan to wear that skirt with that blouse, I know I have no idea what to do when it comes to putting an outfit together. Maybe that is a result of catholic school and being comfortable in the same outfit/uniform every day? So jazzing up my crap taste in clothes? Jewlery, hair pins, hats, earrings, bracelets, shoes. Mom always said a really well made pair of shoes, can make you look like a million bucks. I favor silver jewlery, hair pins, et al so that makes it easier to coordinate until I need to wear gold jewlery. Then I’m floundering again. Anyhoo, hope those tips are relevant because I’ve exhausted the extent of my fashion secrets right there. 😀
