Casually Strolling Into Madness – #UATSC Premiere Part 2

Moving on to day 2 of the “Therapy Weekend for Fan Girls in Need of RA-Re-Ignition” – this will be a less text-heavy post than part 1 but pretty easy on the eye instead. But for posterity’s sake a quick recap of the event itself: The screening of UATSC with cast and crew had been scheduled in the Hyde Park Picture House, the oldest cinema in Leeds, which even has a wikipedia entry of its own. Its modest but lovely facade on a corner of two Victorian terraced streets belies its interior, that was way bigger than its outside. So on Sunday morning I casually strolled into madness…

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

There I have casually blown my cover now. But never mind. As you can see, three-quarters of an hour before the scheduled event there was already a queue of fans at the venue. Since we were in England, the queue was orderly and neatly arranged and wound itself from the box office at the front along the pavement. However, order did not prevail for long when Mr A arrived. Like the proverbial moth to the flame – or a magnet to the pole – the fan girls surged towards the man ;-).

thumb_IMG_5111_1024editedsm_new

In these situations it is every woman for herself, so I got separated from my tried and tested pals Linda, Hari and Helen and moved around like a lioness circling her prey, trying to catch glimpses of Mr A between heads, shoulders and assorted other limbs. Initially I only saw him from behind.

thumb_IMG_5066_1024editedsm_new

Hairline check, ladies. Spot the rogue, little pointy bit…

To my amusement, Mr A had not changed his outfit from the night before. The white Tee, black jacket and black trousers of evil. Guylty approves of light travellers such as Mr A as neither had she brought a change of clothes for the overnighter… *ahem*

thumb_IMG_5087_1024editedsm_new

Once again, RA signed and posed with gusto, many a fan girl’s wishes for a signature or a selfie was heard. A couple of nice stories from the floor: As it was Remembrance Sunday, poppy-wearing seems to be compulsory in Britain. He had a paper poppy but no pin to fix it to his lapel with. My friend Helen noticed his empty lapel and offered him her own enamel poppy pin, which he gratefully exchanged for his paper poppy. Helen pinned her pin to his lapel herself. Unfortunately I was not in the vicinity to document this little scene – maybe Helen will grace us with more detail in a comment, pretty please 🙂

thumb_IMG_5064_1024editedsm_new

I also heard a nice story from fellow Ireland-lover Sunken Treasure who posed with Richard for a selfie. The security guard took the photo and prompted them to say “cheese”, and Richard said “Leeeeeds” 🙂

thumb_IMG_5105_1024editedsm_new

I got quite a few profile pictures out of the occasion – I did not have the heart to push myself in the front and threaten him with my big lens, though.

thumb_IMG_5089_1024editedsm_new

For those interested in photography: Shooting in daylight always results in much better images. There is no cross-lighting, no difficult shadow, and with a low ISO the images are crisp even at largest size. (Except that my lens is f*cked, but that’s a different issue.)

thumb_IMG_5079_1024editedsm_new

How come that even a derp can’t disfigure Mr A?

In case you are wondering about the unusual square format of some of the images – what looks as if I am ruthlessly cropping all female presence out of RA’s vicinity, is actually an attempt at protecting the privacy of fans contained therein and unknown to me and to most of mankind. Which is a bit of a shame because I captured a couple of sweet fan-RA selfie scenes I would have loved to share with you. The issue of privacy in event photography was brought to my attention today (I had to delete an image from yesterday’s gallery), and I am planning to write a post about this, soon, as it is a recurring problem when it comes to photography at the stage door and/or premieres.

My favourite picture of the full 25 image loot? Possibly this one. thumb_IMG_5086_1024editedsm_new

You can make up your mind yourself – I have put them all in the gallery below. Enjoy, save, repost for your own private purpose – please respect copyright and credit if you do so. And tell me which is your favourite and why – I’d love to know so I can learn from my successes and failures.

    • Och, nun komm, das ist doch nun auch wieder nichts Bahnbrechendes. Wir wissen ja alle eigentlich, wie Herr A so aussieht…
Ich fühle mich zudem an diesen Standardspruch auf Autorückspiegeln erinnert: Objects in the (image) may appear closer than they are…

      • Sorry, hatte mich beim Kommentieren vertan. Bezog sich auf einen gaaaanz anderen Blogpost. Kennst du nicht. Klar, wie könnte ich denn deinen kümmerlich grobkörnig und total schlecht ausgeleuchteten Bildausschuss toll finden? Also bittesehr….. 😎

I am your queen. Kneel!

  3. Brilliant pics. I was there at the same time and I have a photo of a girl wearing glasses – if you describe yourself to me I can tell if it’s you or not. Thanks for the wonderful photo’s – I think I’ve spotted a bit of myself!!

  4. Wow! A veritable smorgasbord of RA delectability! Love how expressive that face is. But I *still* miss the old nose. I don’t think that will ever stop. *sigh* ( Reminding myself, “Angie, it’s *his* face, he can do what he wants to with it!”) Feeling crappy today and was about to go back to bed, but saw your post and happily postponed my nap. 😀 Danke!

    • Oh, sorry to hear you have been feeling poorly. Hope a nap will revive you a bit!
The nose. Yes. I still think his old nose was fine. But I have to admit that I do not even see that much of a difference. The nose is still not on the small side. But magnanimous as I am, I wish that RA is happy with his not-so-new-anymore nose.

      • I seem to  notice it more from certain angles than I do others. And I am sure that in person I would be so enthralled the thought would not enter my mind.    I am just  so happy he didn’t go crazy with the rhinoplasty–something–petite and perky would never have worked on that face. 😉  And of course, I want him to be happy with his hooter as in all other areas of his life.  He’s such a dear fellow. ❤ I think the problem is I've been pushing myself a lot  to get this humane society pet calendar project completed and work on some more projects related to the BCHS–and it's all caught up with me today. So a nap is definitely in order! I've got to feel well enough tomorrow to present the new calendar and the PSA to the members! 😀

        • Oh cod, no, not a cutesy little beak, that would’ve been so out of place. I have to say, even pre-op that nose was never ugly in his face, or overshadowed (oooops, unfortunate choice of words) the whole synthesis of his facial composition. It just looked right. But yeah, bias is my middle name…

  6. I feel like I’ve just won the lottery with this gallery! THANK YOU!! I think 5064-1024 is simply stunning, and some lucky lady has a lock of windblown hair immortalized next to the gorgeousness that is Richard. I think my very favorite, though, was the one right next to it (5080-1024.) He’s just so sweetly engaged and interacting with someone, and we have great eyelashes, the beloved forehead crinkles, and the cowlick that just melts my heart and makes me giggle!

  7. Guylty – your photos are wonderful thank you and show all RA’s beautiful facets! I was there at Hyde Park too and attempted to take a selfie with Richard. It didn’t come out, even though he tried show me how to take it, and I am so disappointed. You mentioned in your blog that you had cropped out some of us. if, by any chance you have a photo of RA with a blonde woman, in a black coat with a ragged grey woollen scarf, I would be so grateful if you would send it to me. My previous attempt after the Crucible only succeeded in capturing his lower torso and crotch – lovely though they are, it was his face I was after.

    • Hello Jane, fellow Hyde Park veteran :-). If you like we can take this convo behind the scenes to e-mail and you can mail me a picture of you. Then I will have a look and see if I find you.
As I said, I felt very guilty cropping everyone out, but I didn’t want to risk another complaint.
LOL at the lower torso and crotch btw. That’s more than I have – I never could pluck up the courage to ask for a photograph. Some photographer I am…

  8. Ooooh, again such wonderful pics! Thank you so much!!!

I just had a short glimpse and at the first look I prefer four of them: 5096, 5097 (sweet crinkles!), 5105 (because of the smile) and my favourite is 5103. I love the viewpoint (how did you manage it?), the perfect ear, the attentive expression on his face – very good!
I examined the back-of-the-head-shots on possible bald areas and found none. I think, he has got a crown there (not sure, if it’s the right translation for the german “Wirbel”), and it depends on combing if it’s visible or not. I know this problem very well! Or he has undergone a hair transplantation.
All in all he seems to feel very relaxed and comfortable. In comparison with the pics from SDCC this summer these ones look much more authentic.

    Like

    • Interesting how something that most of us do not like on ourselves (crinkles) look so attractive on him… Bias 😉 ?
5103 probably gives the wrong impression re. perspective because the two-dimensionality fools you into thinking that I am shooting upwards from low down. In fact the camera was at shoulder height (his), but he is leaning his head towards his right, nearer the lady he’s posing for a selfie with. But I agree, ear porn at its finest 😉
Yes, I came to the same conclusion re. the Wirbel. No evidence.
Oh, I take it as a compliment that you find these pics more authentic than SDCC. I suspect that is down to the size of the event, though. This was was so much smaller than SDCC, and therefore also much less stringently organised. No proper line, no ropes to keep fans in check. My impression was that RA enjoyed being there. But hey, that is where *I* am biased…

  9. I can’t possibly pick a favourite photo at the moment- I’m just overwhelmed by how many lovely pictures you managed to take.

I was a bit surprised you had a complaint as my understanding is that photo’s taken in public are considered fair game. I always feel a bit bad for pinning photo’s where the fan has been cut out but will perhaps look at that differently in future.

    My overall review….yum!

    • You are absolutely right, Bolly. Privacy laws vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, but in Europe photography in a public space at a public event is legal, and publishing imagery without the consent of the attendants is implicit. I’ll be posting on that topic, soon, because I researched it (again) today. It’s useful to know because these events will come up again.
Glad you like the images. The size of the event was really conducive to photographing…

    • 🙂 Ah, you are more than welcome.
My reaction to the neck pic surprises me, too. I remember taking the picture, it was half-way through, I think, and my thought was that I was annoyed he had turned his back to me. In German we say “schöner Rücken kann auch entzücken” (a beautiful rear can also endear). I think that phrase has to amended to mention the neck. “RA’s nape in sight can also delight”?

  14. Oh Guylty the photos are just stunning! I’ve saved them – with your permission- as i kept looking back and forth through the gallery enjoying myself. I could look at these on my phone or wall size and i’d be riveted 🙂 They are great caps of the energy of the moment 🙂 More on those on a separate comment as i have a few questions and have to give proper reasons ‘ggg’ for my favourites 🙂
The venue was lovely, it was a bit of a Tardis that place!! I thought: oh another tiny one and then inside it was massive! Maybe not enormous amounts of seats but big hall!
I found it endearing (yeah , i know fangirling much) that he wore the same stuff, just as we did 🙂 And he hadn’t shaved and looks a bit tired, just as we did 🙂 It felt like we had something in common (awwww).

Unlike the day before i got nervous and flustered, gah! Distance is so much better as you can fangirl without feeling embarrassed close up. But the pics are clear proof i couldn’t resist the pull LOL
Look we may individually not like to see out faces in pics for a variety of reasons 😉 but everyone has gotta be realistic and fair about this. If you approach him , you will be part of a fairly big crowd of people doing the same and a large proportion of people will take photos! They will not take photos of you on purpose, but of him but if you are close you end up in them. Fact 🙂 If anyone dislikes being in variety of photos they need to stay farther away from R, it’s just the way it works. If not we just have to live with our faces being there showing off his handsomeness even more LOL I just think it is fair to point out the risk and people to assume responsibility about the fact that it comes with the territory and with star encounters. You can’t ask for privacy in public crowds, it is impossible. And unrealistic as masses of people who were also there have seen you already anyway. But i wouldn’t worry too much, all people look at in the pics is the man 🙂
So: approach at your own peril 🙂 and pleasure, eh! 🙂

The crowd on Sunday was a bit too much for me but the bodyguard provided a rock behind RA so it was perfectly safe. I’m just an orderly one-by-one kind of a person 😉 And less embarrassed at a couple meters away from the man 😉

thanks again for the precious bounty!

I am chuffed to bits if you do so, and I my head has already grown bigger because some people have used my pics as phone wallpapers etc 😀
Yes, RA getting two days out of his premiere attire was a nice endorsement of our own casual attitude 🙂 It’s weird how such unimportant details are taken as indicators for a certain attitude or personality trait. And sure, don’t we all look for things we have in common with the people we like or are interested in…
LOL, you couldn’t resist the pull 😉 Yes. In fact I think you were the one who threw the orderly queue into mayhem by leaving your place in it to head over to where RA moved to as he joined the fans… I remember calling after you “aw, guys, stop, you are breaking up the queue!!! it’s going to be chaos now!” But what was I thinking? There was no holding back, of course…
Re. photography in public places – post on that coming soon. This is an issue that really needs to be clarified – and more from a legal POV than a personal one.

Thanks for using my crappy grey one as well, glad it was decent enough to be used, i quite like the atmosphere of it 🙂 The calm before the storm!
On your favourite, which is mine too alongside 2-3 other – and this is a serious questions 😉 – is there any photographic reason the first thing i think when i see it is : lips! mouth, gorgeous lips… and even the 3rd time it is still lips. And the next thing is lashes 🙂 But yeah for me it is the lippy photo definitely 🙂
sweet dreams and thanks!! tomorrow more 😉

    • Which crappy grey one???
Re. your question (unless it is a rhetorical one?): My visual path through that photo is slightly different to yours. When I look at it, I first start at his right eye (his perspective), and only then to the lips. But yes, the lips occupy my attention, too. Probably because they are slightly pursed and not as thin as they often appear. I probably also like the photo because he is leaning his head to the side. He’s doing it because he is getting into a selfie with a fan, but the effect is like that subconscious gesture of submission, plus, it indicates attention and interest. Oh, and three-quarter profiles are always particularly attractive, I think, because you get a visually interesting shot that contains all most characteristics but challenges by obscuring some. It makes you spend time on analysing the image, forcing your brain to add the bits that are not visible.

      • Morning, sipping my tea dealing with first lot of emails and still in after-glow – amazing! Sorry, i didn’t mean grey literally, it’s just that it was such a grey day weather wise that the cinema photo from the outside feels gloomy, although that was not the mood on sight of course. But funny, i have 3 pics of that and i still like that one best, i think because of the uniform rows of houses around it and the relaxed atmosphere 😉

And yes my question was for real 🙂 Thanks for the explanations, i knew there had to be something, as it is the same face but that picture really stands out 🙂 And you are right about the path too, i start at the eye, unconsciously but immediately move to the lips. But then again i’ve always liked them, i just have never really seen them before under the beard 🙂 They are as lovely as i imagined 🙂
And yes, the tilted head is great, indeed all my favourites of the entire series have him probably tilting his head a bit. More on them later 🙂 Thanks for keeping the embers of the fire stoked 🙂 x

        • Ahhh, you mean your tweet image… Hehe, yes, I included that because it explained the title of my post 🙂 It really felt like that, too, casually strolling into madness. “It was an ordinary morning in an ordinary suburban street. On a street corner, a queue of women had formed an orderly queue. Little did they know it would disintegrate into chaos, as soon as *he* would arrive… I casually strolled into madness…”
Hold on Hari – RA was not sporting the beard at the BOTFA premiere. But granted – he was too far away and you didn’t see him up close…
Tilting the head – he can’t help it. He has to bend down because he’s taller than the vast majority of his fans. It doesn’t quite appear like that in the images, but at the event I remember amusedly noticing that his head stood out above a sea of shorter people. His security guy was rather tall, too, so he doesn’t appear so tall in the pics.

          Liked by 1 person

          • I didn’t see him at all at the Botfa premiere, honestly, not even a hair, I realised by your comments around me that he’d moved away, i only ever saw him in your photos … Which is why i was so crushed really as i’m willing to admit now 🙂 But boy was this compensation, it is all forgotten 🙂 Well not the nice day we had in the cue, but the fact that we couldn’t see him. My only memory of him closer by was from the Crucible 🙂 No wonder i was so stunned Sat LOL

            • Oh, I didn’t realise you had not seen him *at all* at BOTFA. Bummer! Of course that is disappointing, never mind the great time we had ourselves. But he was the reason we went there, so not seeing him must have been a major anti-climax.

  16. I have been haunting this page from morning. I love all the pics. Just cannot make up my mind. But the 4th photo is slightly winning right now. Just wanted to ask why did change them to b&w since the lighting seems to be so perfect .

    • The landscape colour pic? Yes, I like that, too, because there is more space around him. It was towards the beginning of the shoot when people had not quite crowded around him.
As for the b/w – I really love b/w, and here I felt that desaturating took away the distracting background and concentrated the viewer’s gaze more on the subject of the images. The light was pretty good – overcast day at noon.

    • For some reason I prefer the b/w too. Maybe because they are timeless, whereas colour always has a more contemporary feel.
There isn’t really much variation in the images, it’s hard to tell them apart, actually, but yes, I was also quite pleased when I looked through them. For the first time, I was not disappointed by the large screen view of the images.

      • They’re just delicious, and I’m really anxious to hear your take o the film, because, RA or not, you’re reviews are always unbiased ( as I think a number of the longer ones we got are) I still think his face has filled out a little more – at least in the photos. What was your impression when you saw him in person?

        Like

        • Notes are already written – will hopefully get the thing out this evening. Unfortunately reviews are a bit more difficult to write…
When you say filled out a little more – do you mean the way he looks now? In person, RA looked very much slimmed down and less substantial than as Dolarhyde, possibly also less so than in some of his pics from the summer. He wasn’t skinny but he was definitely slim. Not sure about the muscle situation 🙂 – he kept his jacket on at all times. His face looked certainly slimmer to me than his bearded visage before, but that’s only because the beard added on those years. So all in all I thought he was slimmer all ’round. (And gosh, that sounds as if he was chubby beforehand… which he never has been. But he looked very young, elastic, casual, svelte… mhhhh my eyes are glazing over…)

  18. I think the photos of him, untouched, just being himself, are my favorites. No time with hair and makeup. Just him being him. I especially love the laugh lines around his eyes. I hope he never has “work” on his face. It’s lovely the way it is. And he must be a pro at dealing with jet lag. I hope he took a day or two to visit his parents while he was there.

    • You know, I looked through the pictures again last night and was astonished how brown his hair looks, almost as if there are some reddish highlights in there. Tbh, it did not stand out to me at all when I saw him in RL. His hair just looked dark. Personally I believe the colours are not quite right in the photos.

      • shading, lighting and stuff will do things to pictures. We used to do pony pictures years ago and we had a palomino shetland. (very blonde!) IN the summer, when his hair was short, our pictures would come back and he’d be pink. Of course, we realized we were seeing skin beneath the very short hair.

On several occasions, we’d have parents complaint that their blonde child wasn’t a red-head, yet in the pictures, they looked strawberry blonde. It was simply the the red hat reflection. So we started having a lot of black hat cowboys!

Thank you for taking us there with you as I loved seeing it through your eyes (and your lens). It’s difficult to pick a favorite photo as the man is perfect from every angle. I’ve spent more time than I’m willing to admit scrutinizing screen grabs of the few shots of him from the back in BTS (during an argument scene with his wife in the living room) and a scene in N&S (when he knocks on Higgins’ door) that shows a flash of funky cowlick action against his collar. Your photo answers all questions thank you thank you!!!

All I can say in my defense, is that this activity was done in concert with another fangirl (via e-mail), so I know I’m not alone. There are at least two of us obsessed nuts.

When are you gonna post story #3, huh, huh? Got any more pics you’re holding out on us???

      • I think the fact both my husband (and favorite man in the entire world) and I have “funky nape hairlines” along with Richard gives me this odd sense of kinship with our fellow. 😉 And Benny has a cute little stubborn cowlick on top, too.

    • LOL – hairline porn. There we have it. A fetish for every liking. And I am so glad I took that photo. When I was taking it, I was actually wondering whether I was mad, concentrating on the back of his head? A new level of obsession reached? I berated myself for it. But I should have known that there are takers for this 😉
As for part 3 – yes, lots of photos from the speech that RA held before the screening on Sunday. Nothing great, though. Seriously, not kidding. Discoloured (more funky lighting in that venue) and grainy. Also, I was further away, shooting from the balcony, so the pics are small.
I am finding it extremely hard to write up a review of the film. So far there are 4 unfinished versions of the review floating around on my computer, and I am not happy with any of it. It’s stressing me out, actually.

  24. I have a thing for “seeing men from the back”. Now, what does that say about me 🙂
All your photographs are soooo good and thank you for sharing them with us. I can’t pick a favourite, they’re all amazing.
On the topic of this nape-curl-thing: did you know that Crispin means curly-haired? – I wonder if RA wasn’t born with a good head of curly hair 🙂

  27. Thanks that you haven´t closed the comments area 🙂 I was a bit distracted through my own life the last couple of weeks, I was just lurking around Twitter etc…
But you should know : when I was in Rehab, three shrines of JP, LN, GoG joined me…(it seems I´m a lucky girl :).
Coming back: These pics you´ve shot at the “Urban”-premiere are as classical as the ones two years ago.
Und, Hut ab, irgendwann bekommst du noch deinen eigenen shoot mit Mr. A

    • Hello Ute – so sorry to hear you are still doing rehab etc. Glad that the little shrines kept you company. Exactly what they are meant to do!!!
The Urban premiere was really great for pics, I have to say. I still have a massive soft spot for the one I took in Berlin, but I really love the dark one I took at the Chapel FM event and which now sits in my side bar.
Was Letzteres angeht: Das kann ich mir nicht vorstellen, aber eine kleine Fantasie ist es ja wert 😉
