RA Pocket Shrine 112/? – Mon Chéri – and a Raffle

As I have found so often, inspiration comes from the unlikeliest of sources… Every year for Christmas, the cher Mr Guylty receives a box of Mon Chéri chocolates from his mother-in-law. Every year he accepts it graciously, sparing my mother the truth that she is giving the gift under the misconception that he is particularly partial to the cherry and brandy-filled chocolates. He eats them, of course, but he is not particularly fond of them. And often, the box languishes for a while in the cupboard, forgotten by him.

IMG_7893Recently, last year’s box of Mon Chéri was rediscovered in our house, and in the absence of any other chocolates, Mr Guylty opened the box and left it on the kitchen table. I do not like alcohol-filled pralines at all, so they do not tempt me. But the signal-red wrapper, the romantic logo and the golden-lettered box suddenly got my creative juices flowing. With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, I immediately had an upcycling project in my mind’s eye: Mon chéri means “darling”, or Schätzchen (in German), and the latter is a pet name for a certain Brit gentleman occasionally used by me and some of my German fandom friends. The foil wrapper of the chocolate box cried out to me to be used for a RAPS, and thus a romantic Valentine’s RA pocket shrine was conceived.

With no particular recipient in mind, I decided to make an all-rounder shrine. A “one fits all” solution that would hopefully delight *any* fan. And which would be all red, all hearts and all glitter to fit a Valentine’s Day theme and make an adequate prize for a Valentine’s Day raffle.

I cannibalised the foil wrapper and created the background for one of Hariclea’s XL tins, using both the logo as well as the stripy design of the Christmas-edition packaging to cover the inside of the tin. And I placed Mr A in some of his most-beloved roles in it.

Francis Dolarhyde is slightly obstructing the logo, but no matter – it still reads fine because mon cher is French for “my dear”. And isn’t he such to all of us… The shrine would not be a proper RAPS if it did not contain some interactive fun. So the bottom of the tableau has been scored in order to insert the favourite chaRActer of choice and make the RAPS a personal shrine to whichever role of Mr A’s the future owner prefers, such as this:

IMG_5327 smMaybe particularly appreciated by German fans, the scored piece of card proclaims Mon Cheri’s brand slogan – which  has become quite a catch phrase in Germany and translates “Who can say no to that”… Indeed, who can?

IMG_5326 smThe lid of the RAPS contains a selection of chaRActer images the right size for inserting into the diorama. They are held in place by little magnets on the back, or the red heart magnet (which you can also so spot in the picture above). All taken out, they reveal this (permanent) message:

IMG_5344 smA little neck-nuzzle for Valentine’s Day? The sparkly hand is ready to tickle that delicious neck, while the little birdie is twittering sweet nothings into Mr A’s ear… Hopefully, the recipient will find a picture to her liking to adorn the tableau with:

For full-on smooch glory, the RAPS of course also incorporates the usual two candles – romantic candle-light session, anyone?

  4. Mon Cheri 🙂 Meine Oma hat uns zu jedem Weihnachten eine Packung davon geschenkt. Meine Schwester mag die Dinger gar nicht und so hatte ich immer zwei davon. So sehr mag ich sie dann aber auch nicht, dass ich das alles essen wollte. Irgendwann haben wir sie dann auf Kinderschokolade umgepolt, die mochten wir beide ❤
    Mein Großer wollte mir mal eine Packung zum Muttertag kaufen und durfte aber damit nicht durch die Kasse weil er noch keine 18 Jahre alt war, er kam total beleidigt nach Hause 🙂
    Tolle Umsetzung des Themas. Mir gefällt sehr, dass sich jeder seine Lieblingsrolle raussuchen kann um sie "groß" vorne reinzusetzen. So ein Thorin mit wehendem Haar hat einfach was!!!
    Oder der Blick von Mr. Thornton ist einfach zum dahinschmelzen.
    Und so habe ich eine ganze Weile überlegt meinen Namen in den Lostopf zu werfen. Aber ich habe ja schon sooooo einen schönen Piratenshrine und vielleicht sollte ihn besser jemand bekommen der noch keinen hat!

      • Aaaaarrrgg, jetzt hab ich “Modern Talking” im Ohr und vor meinem geistigen Auge einen der wenigen Langhaarigen (mit NORA-Plakette), mit dem ich noch nie etwas anfangen konnte. Nicht schön.
        Dabei wollte ich doch bloß mal ganz unverbindlich nachschauen, was dir zu dieser Verpackung Hübsches eingefallen ist – ein Multi-Picture-Pocket-Shrine …

          • Wow, der ist Anders-Witz ist ja sowas von tiefergelegt, ABER *Tusch*: ich kannte ihn noch garnicht. 😀 Geht also in Ordnung. Ich konnte mich ja schon damals nicht entscheiden, ob ich den süßlichen Anders oder den fett feixenden Haarigel Bohlen schlimmer finden sollte. Oder doch diese Musik….. 🙂

              • Du vergisst meinen unwesentlichen Altersvorsprung *hüstel*. Da waren die Herren für mich schon eher gegessen, sozusagen 😉 Aber es ist ja nieeee zu spät, um Versäumtes nachzuholen!
                Ohne Scheiss: die kamen bei mir im Beritt so gut wie nicht vor. Mit Mitte 20 würde ich mal im Rahmen einer Laienaufführung schlechter selbstgemachte Sketche und anderer fragwürdiger Darbietungen mir Cheri, Cheri Lady intensiver konfrontiert 😬 Ansonsten habe ich mich gekonnt weggeduckt!

                • Ob die 2 Monate jetzt so viel ausmachen??? *seelenmassier* 😉 In meinem Jahrgang kam man da nicht dran vorbei, obwohl ich zu meiner absoluten Ehrenrettung sagen kann, dass ich vom allerersten Sehen (bei “Wetten, dass”???) Modern Talking schon zum Brechen fand und geflissentlich boykottiert habe.

              • Du Glückliche! Ich war in meiner Schulzeit mit sehr überzeugten Anhängerinnen konfrontiert. Verstanden kaum Spaß, fast schon fanatisch – hat mich sehr vom Fan-Dasein abgeschreckt.
                Und jetzt .. Himmel hilf! Ich arbeite echt noch an meiner neuen Selbstwahrnehmung und kann jede Unterstützung gebrauchen.

                • Oh, zu Schulzeiten hättest du mich nie als so überzeugtes Fangirl erlebt wie jetzt. Das war mir damals entschieden zu “albern”. Ich hatte Prinzipien – und war dabei mich nach meinen eigenen Vorstellungen zu formen. Heute – naja, hat man erstmal ein gewisses Alter erreicht, ist einem mehr oder weniger egal, was die anderen denken. Dass ich nicht überall das ganze Ausmaß meiner Fangirlerei preisgebe, liegt nicht daran, dass mir peinlich wäre, wenn meine Freunde das (und mich) bescheuert fänden, sondern dass ich einfach keine Lust auf langwierige Erklärungen und Diskussionen habe, warum das intensive Verfolgen der Karriere eines Schauspielers für mich einfach Spaß macht und mit der Entladung von aufgestauten Emotionen verbunden ist. Aber Gottseidank gibt es dann ja wenigstens virtuell Gelegenheit, das mit Gleichgesinnten auszuleben, bei denen man sich nicht rechtfertigen muss.
                  Dementsprechend kann ich dir zu deiner neuen Selbstwahrnehmung sagen, dass wirklich nichts Peinliches, Schlimmes, Anrüchiges, Ehrenrührendes an deinem Enthusiasmus für Armitage dran ist. Sieh es so: Du entlädst deine Gefühle, erhältst dafür positive Impulse zurück, indem du dich an seinem Talent, seiner Schauspielkunst (und gut, auch an seinem blendenden Aussehen und seiner anziehenden Menschlichkeit) erfreust. Du lernst neue Leute kennen, fängst evtl. an, dich mit Technik (Internet, gifs, Videos, Photoshop) auseinanderzusetzen und neue Fähigkeiten zu lernen, oder setzt kreative Energien frei und um. What’s not to love? All das ist positiv und erstrebenswert. Die Kunst und die Umgangsformen eines fremden Mannes zu schätzen, bedeutet nicht, dass man zum liebestollen Teenager regressiert ist. Ohne unsere Zuwendung würde auch den Künstlern etwas fehlen. Wir sind ihr Publikum – nicht nur im Theater und Kino, sondern auch bei Interviews, Preisverleihungen und Red Carpet Events. Ich find uns gut *grins*

                Der Mensch und Schauspieler braucht ja auch Anregungen und muss sich fortbilden.

            • Leider hat der Typ mit seiner Kette diesen Namen für immer versaut. Bei meiner ersten Schwangerschaft stand bei der Namensgebung für ein Mädchen auch Nora auf der Liste. Aber irgendwie konnte ich mich nicht richtig durchringen. Es war gut, dass es dann eh ein Junge wurde…

              • Wie gut, dass einem manchmal die Entscheidungen abgenommen werden 😂 A wollte wohl den Jungennamen auch nicht. Ich bin überzeugt davon, dass sie deshalb noch spontan im Geburtskanal das Geschlecht gewechselt hat. Der Jungenname kam aus dem Comicbereich 😁

                  • Ja, ist gut so wie es ist. Konfession war eh Wurscht. Der evang. Gatte hatte da sowieso keine Aktien. Viel schlimmer wäre gewesen, wenn es zu einer Assoziation mit Cälvin Klein gekommen wäre. Andererseits dachte ich auch mal, dass sich die phonetische Nähe zu der ital. Designerhaushaltsmarke Alessi als Problem herausstellen könnte. Tja, ist heute lang nicht mehr so präsent wie in den 90-ern.

                    • Ich auch nie wieder, seit ich sie verknautscht, live und in Farbe das erste mal gesehen habe. Und wie gesagt, die Marke ist nicht mehr sooo omnipräsent. Ich hatte einige Teile. Den Wasserkessel habe ich vor ein paar Jahre bei eBay vertickt. Kam nochwas bei rum 😉

    • You know, sometimes the packaging of commercial/food products is actually quite pretty. Well, the Mon Cheri stuff is not really *that* pretty. It’s quite 1970s, I think, but it appeals to me because it is largely devoid of writing. I really dislike that on most packaging – too many words, too much marketing, really. Less is so much more, and also makes packaging much more upcyclable, imo.
      The little bird fell into my hands as I was combing through my box of tiny pendants. I wanted to have something cute-sy balance the “phoarr”-character of the shrine 😉

  8. oh wow, gorrrgeous!!! You make me laugh with the Mon Cheri 🙂 it’s like when people give me caramel chocolates, yuuuk! on the other hand nothing i like more than boozy chocolates! these and the Mozartkugeln i can go through boxes of them without noticing, these even more than MK because the latter are very rich but this… it’s the worry about getting drunk on them that stops me LOL
    Ok, enough of the chocolate and onto the real dessert! 🙂
    OMG that is a loooovely shrine!!! and so playful and all the detail!!! i love all the itsy bitsy hearts and all… Francis in it made me laugh so hard! It makes it looks blood spattered and gruesome and it’s funny in a dark way 🙂 Or at least it is very funny to me.
    We don’t do Valentine’s back home, i only used to exchange cards with my cousin who lives stateside and send my nieces and nephew a card, other than that i usually stay well away, hearts pretty much used to give me allergies :-p (yes, really)
    The #richieswap put a lovely different and very enjoyable spin on it 🙂 But traditionally since i have to put up with the madness here i used to purposefully go do the most gruesome or opposite thing. I did Verdi’s Rigoletto which i adore, but which is about a duke abusing an innocent girl and getting away with it, poor girl dies to save him! (the music is heavenly though) and last year i think i did Ruling Class around that time.. McAvoy as hippy Jesus and then murderous Jack the Ripper, so fitting 🙂
    That does not save me from the snugglers during the performances! more than once i thought why are you hear when you are not watching, i can hear you making noises, go get a room! But there you go 🙂

    I suspect this year the ballet i am seeing is not nearly gruesome enough, i blame it on Richie to have mellowed me down, hmph!

    So yeah, i could see myself in Hannibal mode on the day still 🙂 But i wouldn’t be averse to spending the day with Porter, Thorin or Guy either 🙂 Thornton would have to stop with the mushy stuff first 😉 Maybe we can talk about unions..

    • Oh give me caramel chocolates any day! In the future, I’ll keep the boozy stuff and wait for an opportunity to swap it with you. Win-win for both of us!
      LOL – I had not noticed that the big Dolly cut-out in the red shrine makes it look like blood, but you are right. Ugh, and then all the dissociated heads look as if he has chopped them off, psychopath that he is… Lovely idea, not. (I probably shouldn’t further expand on that interpretation or prospective shrine owners will get put off completely…)
      What an interesting counter-strategy to Valentine’s. Well, to tell you the truth, I have never observed the day, either. It wasn’t particularly big in Germany when I was growing up – more like an artificially created occasion for florists and the greeting card industry to make more sales. It’s definitely bigger here in an English-speaking country, but Mr Guylty does not believe in artificially created occasions for expressing his love. (In fact, he is not even here for Valentine’s – currently on holiday sans moi). But your strategy takes the biscuit, effectively cancelling out all the smoochy love-liness by watching gruesome plays and operas. LOL. Damn those people who spread the love in the theatre 😉

        And well for a change i will spend the time in manly company! And not one but all 4! of my lovely dancers will be there 🙂 For once i’ll feel really loved up 🙂 Even if we are separated by an full auditorium 😉 I shan’t be picky 🙂
        But yes i wish i was seeing the new Frankenstein ballet! but have to wait until April.

        • Shrine for everyone. I am confident that it will fit any preference. (And if that should be a character who is not already included in the range of characters, I would gladly print, cut and include it for the recipient…)
          Despite Mr Guylty’s absence, time seems even more scarce. Quality time with the offspring. And even less shrining time because they are on school holidays from today… (Maybe, if they sleep in late, I could steal an hour or two in the morning…)

  16. Stop. You are killing me. This shrine is a crimson box of fabulousness. I had to invent a new word to describe it. Like Zeemuse, I am captivated by this shrine. I will have to keep my fingers and toes crossed in hopes of winning it. Not an easy thing to do. Two more thoughts. I was just thinking that poor Gary had never had been immortalized in a shrine. I think it’s because he is wet and worried through most of it. He looks the best at the end, in a t shirt and jeans in his front yard. The other thing – I love your shrine lids. The hearts you have sprouting out of the scroll work are wonderful on this one. So cute I can’t stand it. The whole thing is just too much RA cuteness to resist.

      Yes, I think you are right. Gary has never been enshrined. There are a few others who haven’t, but considering that Gary was at least a co-lead character, that is rather a failure. Must rectify that, soon. (Keeping your advice re. t-shirt and jeans in mind. Am not a fan of beige slacks, myself.)
      The hearts and scrolls of the lid design are courtesy Hariclea who gave me the stickers. They do look good on the shrines, I agree!

  17. Ah, this just has to be one of your MOST fabulous creations, and I love how interactive it is. It has applications for any number of moods one might be in on Valentine’s Day (if V-Day makes one feel murderous, well, Dolarhyde’s your man… if you’re feeling swoony, maybe go with Thornton… if you’re *in the mood* well, Guy’s just sex on a stick and particularly THAT shot of him is likely to keep those juices flowing!!) and, well, any day. We shouldn’t limit ourselves. LOL

    Re: Gary… he looks awfully hot at the breakfast table at the start of the movie, all stern… and Dad Pants out of sight. Just sayin’. He totally needs a shrine. And forgive me for making another suggestion, but there *are* a few shots of those dad pants, from behind, that I had no objection to…

    But back to this shrine… I love that shot of Lucas licking his fingers… very in keeping with a box of chocolates! And Harry Kennedy all cheesy grinning from behind a scowling Dolarhyde gives me the giggles. Love that little bird, and gosh, there would be times when the bottom of the tin with no other adornments would be all that I’d need. That nape. Whew!

    • That’s another text worthy for the RAPS Inc. product catalogue! I like the way you are putting the various chaRActers into an application context *grins*. Lucky choice of pics (although, if I am telling the truth, I would admit that I was using up images that I had already printed, and merely appropriated the shrine…)
      Oh, Gary at the breakfast table – great suggestion (especially if “dad pants” *sniggers* are hidden from sight). I really must look through the available imagery again and remedy the situation. I had not even noticed that there were some peach shots, either…
      Lucas licking his fingers was actually one of the few pictures I *did* print up especially – more than fitting for a shrine based on a brand of pralines…
      And yeah, I thought that a bit of real RA might be nice, too. With a tin slightly bigger than normal, it seemed fitting to show his neck – which would invite the recipient to longingly stroke over the print and pretend it was real…

  20. Noch so ein herzerwärmendes Audible Interview bei Servetus. Er vermittelt echte Begeisterung. Da steigt der geneigten Betrachterin auch fast das Wasser in die Augen (ob vor Lachen oder Weinen).
    Was trägt er denn in diesen Audible Filmchen für ein Armband am rechten Handgelenk? Hat er das schon länger oder ist das eine modische Anwandlung?

      • Clarissa – so,so … Das scheint ja recht aufwühlend zu sein. Da konnte er mal wieder seine dunkle Seite zur Geltung bringen und die Damenwelt gleichzeitig mit seinem Charme völlig willenlos machen. (Drastische Lösung, sich am Ende zu Tode zu hungern.)
        Ich bin immer noch mit Hamlet beschäftigt und total begeistert. Muss viele Stellen mehrfach hören und arbeite an meinem Englisch.

        Ja, es handelt sich wohl um ein Lederarmband. Ein Geschenk – er ist eine treue Seele.

  32. Ooh, how lovely! And soo many RA characters, just one for every special need…And the “Mon Chèri” theme fits really good.
    I had to grin about the “Mon Cher” abbreviation since this remembers me on a very famous gay bar in our town. As a child I saw this place every day on my way to school, always closed during the day…but nevertheless very interesting and shadowy!

    Memories awoke with the “Mon Chèri” chocolates. My father used to present them to my mother to every single opportunity. After several years and several added kilograms, she couldn’t stand them anymore, so my sister and me had to consume them, with 5 and 9 years, respectively. In those days, nobody spent a thought on children and alcohol…
    Personally, I preferred “Goldnuss-Pärchen” and “3 Musketiers” (like Curly Wurly but much better).

    • Yes, this is a shrine that could potentially fulfill any fan’s needs 😉
      We all seem to have our own childhood memories of Mon Chéri, it seems. I was introduced to them as a child, too, and as you say, no one spared a thought to the fact that they contained alcohol and were unsuitable for children. In my case, I did not like the alcohol taste at all – and I still don’t, many years later…
      3 Musketiere – oh yes, I remember them, too, and I loved those bars. I always was – and still am – a sucker for Toffifee…

  33. Puuuuuuuuuuuuuh! Jetzt habe ich mich endlich durch alles hier gelesen – herrlich! 😀

    Spätestens Haris Blut-Assoziation (war mir nicht aufgefallen, aber jetzt sehe ich es auch) hat dann natürlich dafür gesorgt, dass diese unromatische Fännin, bei der Herzchen im Überfluss** eher Aggressionen auslösen, auch “WIllhamwillhameillham!” blökt. *ggg*

    ** gemeint sind die Herzchen, die mir überall dort begegnen, wo man nur mein Bestes will – mein Geld. 😉

    • Ok, ich muss wirklich mal wieder einen Schrein ohne so viel Glitter und Herzchenkram machen… wird ja auch wirklich langsam langweilig… Ich hab nur so viele davon, ich muss die loswerden 😉

  34. Excellent use of a found object (the packaging on that box really is irresistible) and very interactive as well! I agree that this may be an “all rounder” but it is certainly a shrine deluxe!
