Fan Fiction Frenzy

I can feel a fan fic frenzy coming on. It’s already in full swing over on Tumblr, where I noticed a few weeks ago that the Tumblr-based RArmy was big into fiction writing. (See various recent weekly round-ups.) Myself, I seem to go through phases when it comes to fan fiction. I never really write fan fiction myself (excluding those fluffy, silly *ooof*lets that I used to accompany my *ooofs* with); I leave that to people who are better at writing fiction than me. But I can be an avid reader of fan fiction. And when it happens, then it becomes an obsession for a while, spending hours immersing myself in the imagination of my talented fellow fans, following the adventures of my favourite chaRActers. – It has been quite a while since I last experienced such a fan fic reading frenzy, and maybe it is because I have decided to give up Youtube for Lent and I have more time on my hands, but it looks as if I am back in the throes of fan fic fever. So I thought I’d share a few links to recent, new fan fics here which do not come by way of Tumblr and have therefore possibly not attracted your attention yet.

Zeesmuse

The one fan fic author I always keep up with, is actually Zeesmuse – because she blogs herself and keeps us updated on her fan fic activities. Her latest continuation of her wonderful Guy fic Manna from Heaven in the Aside from Heaven series has been updated on various platforms. For easy accessibility here is a link to her home on AO3 where Aside is now on chapter 4K. Guy’s reiteration Sir William is plotting deep revenge there. A dark chapter, in Zee’s own words.

Then, today, something compelled me to check Dreamerfiction for new fics, and lo and behold – I have come across three pieces that I would like to recommend to you. In case you are not familiar with Dreamerfiction yet: It is a website by fans for fans, containing hundreds of fan fics on all of Richard’s chaRActers. There is generally no RPF found on the page, but other than that there are no boundaries – i.e. there is NSFW fiction there, too. The board is only open to members, but interested readers can apply for membership by e-mail via admin (at) dreamerfiction.com.

JennyS

So, over on DF, JennyS has started a new, multi-chapter fiction about Guy of Gisborne. Entitled Thorns and Honey, JennyS’s new fiction is a continuation of an earlier work (A Powder of Yarrow, also available on DF) and is basically set after the end of season 3 of RH. I won’t be giving too much away if I am saying that Guy has survived the poisoned dagger of his sister Isabella, and the sword of Vaisey. The first chapter of Thorns and Honey pick up after Guy’s convalescence. It is beautifully written; JennyS has a wonderful way of capturing the feel of this medieval setting. And her Guy is very much in character. From the looks of it, there will be intrigue, there will be adventure, and there will be romance. I can’t wait to read more! Here’s the link directly to Thorns and Honey – which will most likely only work if you are registered with DF.

Still breathtakingly gorgeous, although I have seen this picture so often…

Jayarjay

Staying with Guy, I also read Jayarjay’s latest Guy fic. This is brought to us as a ficlet that was intended as a Christmas present to readers, and it’s a short, one-chapter story that fits the spirit of the holiday season. Taking place in season 2 of RH, we see Guy emancipating himself from the sheriff. Some nice fluff including Marian, too. Faithful to the series, and giving Guy some more of what his fans always knew was inside him… Here’s the link to Snowflakes and Kisses, also on DF.

Thoughtful Guy? *sigh* Another eternal favourite of mine. Both the pic and the guy.

Redliverpool

Lastly, a recently added new, multi-chapter fiction by redliverpool. And this is a first for me. No, not in the sense that I haven’t read redliverpool before. I think I have read all of her fics. But this one is based on The Crucible. Yep, I confess, TC or rather: John Proctor, has always been slightly sacrosanct for me. Proper hero, weighty subject, serious literature and all that. But well, the man has that one little “flaw”, a little smudge on his “white vest” – his adultery with Abigail Williams. This is where redliverpool comes in; and boy does she come in. Her chapter one of Bewitched jumps right in the “action”. So, be warned, NSFW. But written in trademark good style, and making me curious where it will all lead. Here’s the link to chapter 1 of Bewitched.

Action. Could be interpreted differently.

Right, there we are with new fan fiction that I have subjectively deemed worth-while reading. There must be more; there *is* more. If you have recommendations, please leave them in the comments. And if you are visiting the sites to read the fics, please leave the authors a comment for their fab work!

Happy reading!

  1. Wow, two new Guy fics I didn’t know!
I think I’ll have to subscribe that forum, if I didn’t already done that (I’m not good at following forums, I always forget to check them.)
Guy is a very demanding knight, once he begins forcing an author to write about him, the author had to obey. I neglected my novels to write about him, and it’s almost three years that he has my complete attention 😀

    • Yay, if I managed to bring something new to you, a fan fic writer herself, then I have done well :-). Definitely check out DF, Eugeal. And even better: you could decide to publish your fics there, too. Even if they are already published somewhere else, I think. It’s a great forum because it’s easy to find authors and keep up with new stuff.

      • I just tried to contact them again, I hope this time it will work 🙂
If I can I’ll surely post my works there too, I have A LOT of them, and I’m slowly translating in English all the stuff I wrote in Italian 🙂

  2. I can wholeheartedly second the recommendations for Zee’s Muse and Jayarjay. Redliverpool’s Crucible fic is the first I’ve seen. As you say the original is a serious subject, but Red totally pulls it off in a way that emphasises rather than detracts from the theme.

Oooh, and thanks for the shoutout, Guylty. ☺️ (And the lovely pics.❤) For anyone not already on DF, I’ve bitten the bullet and begun to post Yarrow for the world at large on AO3.

    • You know what, Jenny – to my shame it only occurred to me when I read there on DF that the JennyS who comments on my blog, is the same that writes fiction on DF. You may have told me that bts before, but somehow I didn’t realise until today. Anyway, I thought it was time to give fan fic a shout-out again. And it was when I was reading the comments on ch 1. of Thorns that I learnt there were the other new fics. So glad I looked at DF today! And to reiterate: I can’t wait until you – and jayarjay and redliverpool – write again!
And for those reading here in the comments: The link to “Yarrow” on AO3 is https://archiveofourown.org/works/13702938.
PS: Jenny, you are welcome to post links in comments, too. Don’t worry if the post is temporarily locked in moderation – I will approve them. You’d be doing us all a fan service!

I’ll read your story on AO3, JennyS 🙂

  4. Whooo hoooo! New stuff!

I need to sit down and just have a fanfic READING day. Don’t know when I’m going to be able to schedule one, but I am!

(And thank you for the shout-out.)

      • I keep forgetting to ask the moderator at RAF – formerly RASF at Tumblr – if she’d like some help. Real Life got in her business and I just keep forgetting.

Otherwise, I normally don’t post fanfic at Tumblr and I don’t read it there. It’s too easy to get lost, forget,…

  6. Must be hive mind effect in action – I attempted to log in to Dreamer yesterday for the first time in forever! (I apparently have forgotten my password so I’ll need to get that sorted!)

Thanks for all of the suggestions 🙂

    • You know, when things like that happen – i.e. two people independently sharing the same thought – I always wonder whether it can really just be mere coincidence. And granted, it’s not, because we recently talked about fiction, so we were both aware of fiction and of the places where it is published. Nonetheless.
And btw, I was thinking of you when I was reading fan fic today.

  7. Oh, nice to have suggestions again! And turns out i must have tried to get access in DF but never managed 😦 i’ll try again but glad we can find some in AO3 🙂 I’ve been catching up lately too 🙂 I liked the try on Crucible… Proctor has inspired us so much i feel my taboo with him in fiction needs to go as it i unfair to curtail imagination with such a powerful character 🙂
Thank you too all the brave and creative writers out there!! Please let us know about your work!

    • Do try to get access to DF. It is an absolute treasure trove and will keep you busy for days, weeks, months! And pssst – when it comes to “mature” content, it is actually way hotter than recent audio offerings.
As for Proctor – my prudishness regarding that character is really silly. After all, he was no angel. But yeah, I was surprised – pleasantly.
And yes, you are so right – please, dear writers, tell us where we can find your work.

          • hm, i think this is what happened last time i tried too, the email bounced, as the email it is supposed to be forwarded to no longer works or is active so the one they have linked to the admin email it tells you to contact 😦 And there don’t seem to be any other joining instructions… sadly..

Maybe some of the active writers over on DF know how to get in touch with the current admin.
                  Very sorry!

                    • The issue at the time was the birth of the board in an uproar over RH fanfic in 2007 and the anger of a section of the fandom that violent or R- or X-rated fanfic was visible in different places, something that Armitage also seemed to see negatively (the origin of something we don’t hear often anymore, but used to hear all the time: “what about the children?”). So it was specifically set up to be hard to access (the other forums had ratings rules for their fanfics — I think C19 is still PG-13 only, for instance, so some fanfic that was presented in PG-13 on C19 made it onto dreamerfiction in a more unexpurgated version), hence the rules about being 18 and needing another fan to vouch for you. Since the birth of A03 I think that has been less of a concern, but the issue now would be all the people who put fiction there under the assumption that it would not be easily visible. (And some of the fic on that site has a second password, i.e., you need the author’s permission to see it as well, usually for content reasons.) In other words, I don’t think it’s something that they can just be asked to do. What they need is more active moderation. There are actually several mods but apparently they don’t look at the account all that often.

                    • OH, I see. Even though I have been a member since 2012 (I think), I know very little about the genesis of the site. It’s of course a lot of work maintaining a board like that, especially when it has restricted access. And investing that amount of time probably also depends on how active the users on the site are.

    • Hi S, seems the original email linked to their admin, ie the one the message on the board tells you to contact is no longer working. I have a vague memory of this happening last time i tried to0, the email bounced back. Maybe they don’t want the membership to expand indefinitely..
