Hello all, I am back from my short trip, and I just want to get this round-up out there, even though it is already Thursday. The trip was fantastic – we had four days of sunshine, no rain, and temperatures around the 20°C mark. That’s it, Irish summer done. But oh, this country is glorious when it is mild and sunny. I travelled to the Northwest coast of Ireland with a friend, moving on to the Northern tip of Ireland along the Wild Atlantic Way. A couple of impressions courtesy of iPhone:

- Ok, since the fourth was with you on Thursday, here is the obligatory Star Wars reference: Richard and Star Wars. Although the jury is still out on the first image in riepu10’s set. Is that really RA?
- I have a feeling that this picture posted by deepestfirefun is a manip. But boy is it convincing. Casual, silver, precious *thud*
- Here’s a nice question for RA fans posted by zyxst: What do these chaRActers taste/smell like? My answers: a salty sea breeze, a crisp winter’s day just after it has snowed, leather-steel-and-forge, and gun powder. Your answers?

I have lots of stuff to catch up with. I haven’t finished Wolverine yet, and I really want to get started on a little summer project. Oh, and I have had some good news today from my major client. Looks like they might need me a bit longer than they thought, and they have asked whether I might be available after the initially suggested end of contract. Fingers crossed – I like the client, I know the work, and I can do with the income.

Yep, making hay while the sun shines… In both respects. We had the best of the weather, too, and really made the most of it with a hike every day and some interesting sights on the way.

Pop!Thorin was complaining about the heat. He was sweating under his armour. But he generally liked the scenery – it was more rough’n’ready than pretty-pretty…

We spent the whole month of September there, and we had just five days days when it rained – even then, it wasn’t constant.

That’s the good thing about the frequent rain in Ireland: It never rains for long. You get a heavy shower – and then it ends as abruptly as it started, the sun comes through, and within minutes it looks as if it never even rained in the first place…

What a great surprise to log on and find all these goodies. Hmm, no Guy? Still, Lucas was sublime. Yet again, I’m railing at what they did to him. Even worse than ending up among the cold drinks. If he had to go, it should have been in a blaze of glory like our dwarf king or our favourite dark knight.
Such beautiful scenery you have over there, and it was a rare treat so see Pop!Thorin again. I shall be crossing fingers, toes (and eyes?) that the work will come flooding in very soon. The not too taxing kind, but lucrative with plenty of luxury travel.

I know, very little Guy this time. But well, lots of other heroes. Lucas’ demise is something I prefer to ignore. It was ignominious! Grah!
Ireland is a beautiful part of the world indeed. And part of its attraction are actually the people. We had a number of really nice encounters that made our day.
And yes, hoping for some kind of new work arrangement that will somehow continue the phase of stability that I had been experiencing the last three years.

Gorgeous Ireland pictures. We’re thinking we may do an Ireland trip to celebrate our 30th anniversary. Do you think October is too rainy?

According to experience and statistics, the best months to travel are May and September. That’s when rainfall is the least. So if you can move your trip closer to September, you’re better off. Definitely avoid anything from late October to end of February. Otherwise: it’s a great, little country to travel in. I’d recommend you travel around, rent a car and go along the Wild Atlantic Way, Ireland’s coast road from the top to the bottom of the island. It’s stunning! And make sure you also book some B&B’s on your journey because that way you get the full Irish experience with friendly and chatty landlords/ladies. Oh, and do let me know if you book anything. If you are passing through Dublin, I’d love to meet.

Thanks! We’ve been looking at some self-guided tours with car and hotels booked and it looks like Dublin would be a stop. It would be great to meet! I’ll let you know if/when it happens. (We’ve got to book an August trip to Toronto, first, for my niece’s wedding.)

Sounds good! Dublin definitely should be a stop, but don’t stay too long. Two days are enough. Imho the rest of the country is more impressive, particularly the West coast. Don’t attempt to do the whole island in two weeks; just concentrate on one half. Then you have time to enjoy stops in stately homes, the castles, the coastline, the beaches, the churchyards and monasteries, the dolmens and ringforts – and the chats with the people you meet along the way. Irish people are generally friendly and very happy to chat. Hehe, and so am I, assimilated as I am, so we’ll have to meet, and I’ll give you a tour of a grand Georgian house that has still many of its original features and is much like a living museum 😉

Good advice! We may only be able to do a week to 10 days, partly because we will be taking the (then) 17 year-old out of school. It will be his last year of high school. And then if the 23-year-old comes, he can’t miss too much work. I’ll let you know what happens.

In that case, it is even more important that you don’t overdo it and not attempt to get the whole country in. Stick to only one half, possibly one quarter of the island and instead take your time there. Get out of the car to walk an hour every day to experience nature. Anyway, let me know closer to the time and I’ll give you even more unsolicited advice 😉
