RA Pocket Shrine 163/? – Mystified

The shrine fun continues. No sooner was Guy under wraps, and I started on the next project. I’m probably oversaturating the market – both for shrines and for RAPS posts on my blog, and yesterday’s Double Guy is a hard act to follow, judging by your comments. But I’ll try my luck and post this one straight from the shrining bench. After all, the contents are extremely attractively packaged. And by that I do not mean my imagery or styling of the shoot but the actual man and his clothes on show. Plus, for once I am not playing with Stone Age material, but more recent stuff. I really need to work on the topicality of my shrining endeavours.

So, after I put the lid on Sir Guy, I was looking through my stash of tins and came across today’s beauty. After a bit of thinking (and based on looking at the images that I had already printed out for future shrining purposes) I had an idea who might fit into this tin.

Mystifying indeed. Some of you have already see the tin on Twitter and made a few good guesses (hello Sahra and Herba *waves*) but didn’t get the right answer. Disregard the ‘ouija’ and just think of the mystery and you might get to…

… a policeman on the watch.

(I tried a new camera set-up for the shrine shoots and was really pleased with the results, so here’s another one, just because I couldn’t decide which picture to use.)

Don’t you love that depth of field? Yes, I exclusively got my hands on DI Rowan Jackman’s woolly jumper for my shoot. He was reluctant to let go of it (as seen in the picture above, defensively holding on to his coat to prevent me from snatching his favourite chunky knit).

The pose, the style, the fantastic photo editing by photographer Dan Kennedy who took that shot on location while shooting the Their Lost Daughters ad for Audible, it all really made me catch my breath when I first saw the image. And yeah, no wonder. I mean, even the candles are sputtering in awe.

Incidentally you are also getting an insight into my photo set-up or rather the fairly haphazard styling of the shoot. Guylty, ever the pro… 😂 So much so that I couldn’t work out how to crop the two images that are the base of this gif, in exactly the same way so as to create the illusion of movement in the gif.

Ok, swooning and sputtering aside, there’s obviously also another side to the shrine. Here it comes.

Yeah, if anything, my latest shrining activities prove that I am not on the fence about RA anymore. Are you? (Excluding Helen from this question, who probably *is* on the Fens.)

So there, gorillas Rowan Jackman in the myst, eh, mist. Because boy, does Jackman need to come alive on the screen! I haven’t written a review of Armitage’s narration of the Joy Ellis thriller yet because I listened to it on holiday and did not have time to apply myself to a thorough review, but just to say that I not only enjoyed the story, the characters in it, and the narration by Armitage, but I fully concur with both Ellis and RA that Jackman seems like a natural fit for Armitage. I loved the – slightly mysterious – DI and his efficient working relationship with DS Evans, but I’d like to *see* more of him. His (privileged?) back story, his house, his car, and of course his chunky jumpers. Thanks to the Audible interview and trailer I was able to imagine the setting in the deceivingly plain eeriness of the Fens, and Armitage did all the rest with his fabulous voice. Now add to that Armitage’s acting abilities and his – not inconsiderable – British handsomeness, and they could have a new TV ratings sensation on their hands. Do we need to start a “RA for Ro” campaign?

In any case, even if you don’t agree with my cursory assessment of Their Lost Daughters, I hazard the guess that you might approve of the fabulous Dan Kennedy shots I set in scene in this shrine. And whoever gets this RAPS in the end, could make it a shrine to RA only by removing the reference to the policeman – the words in the top part of the shrine are magnets and can be taken off. For further interactivity, just stroke the stubble.

  1. 😂 Not on the fens but not far away! Lovely shrine (I don’t think the market will ever be saturated, Guylty! They are all so different, you can never have too many. I’m convinced that in a hundred years time there will be a major exhibition of your collected works! 😃)

    Yes, he really does need to bring this character to the screen. I can’t believe someone hasn’t spotted the potential.

    • Hehe, in any case, you are “closest” to DI Jackman. Happy Norfolk Day, btw!
      And ha, I am not sure whether I am loving or cringing over the idea that there may be a major retrospective of my collected shrine works in a hundred years time 😱. The accompanying catalogue will read “She was a misunderstood artist during her lifetime, save for a select group of connoisseurs who recognised the scope of her art.” 😂
      I really hope that someone is going to discover the series. I think the chances are good, after all Audible/Amazon are pushing Ellis as a writer – the effort and money that was put into the trailer is an indication. And then both Ellis’ and Armitage’s remarks about Jackman as a character RA would be perfectly suited for… Fingers crossed and “RA for Ro” all the way!

  2. Wow, I agree with Helen. There can never be too many shrines out in the world. This one is yummy. Loved the wooly backdrop and flickering candles. Great creation, as always.

    • Thank you for indulging me in my shrine obsession ;-), I’m relieved to hear that there is still demand for them!
      The woolly jumper belongs to my daughter and it is an oversized men’s jumper. I might just have to steal it because it really reminds me of RA…

    • So did I, dotti. I really enjoyed the audio book, and I can’t wait to hear the other two. Am just waiting for my monthly Audible credits to come through as the last one is tied up with ‘Man from St Petersburg’.

      • I finally got Tatooist ,again Man from St.Peterburg,not offered for me, so I found book depository, and order from there and preordered the other queen. Reading Bloody Chamber tonight. Still waiting for DVD of Berlin Station 2,.

    • The red hearts are always in every shrine. It’s become a bit of a trademark, much like the disco ball that is also always included.
      I deliberately stuck the lower cut-out on a couple of dimensional stickers because I wanted a shadow from the spiky hair. It’s not quite so obvious in my photos because the light was soft, but if looking at it with a strong light shining from the side, the cowlick is doubled as a shadow 🙂
      Stroking the stubble is a bit of an obsession with the Armitage Army, I think 😉

  7. Thank you for yesterday and the fan pointed eastward to ease my suffering 🙂 , but the Fan in the East (or SE.UK) is once again overheating. Jumpers and stubble now! Lovely shrine and one to warm the cockles on a cold winters night. Think that jumper might just be as big a sensation as the one in the Scandi-noir ‘The Killing’, with Sophie Grabol. Very much like the idea of a multi-sensory shrine too. Goes above and beyond, LOL.xx

    • Hehe, yes, actually a bit careless of me to contribute to the summer heat with woolly jumpers. Really something for the winter. Mind you, stubble is hot *any* time of year.
      Multi-sensory shrines – I have often lamented the impossibility of including sound and scent in these shrines… Or maybe I have to just work on that…

    • Oh, glad that you like it – and think it fits the original work of fiction it was inspired by.
      If there is interest in this shrine for an auction, I will happily put it up for auction. I wasn’t sure whether this one would be “detailed” enough, but it looks as if the reactions to it are good, too.

  10. Love the use of the sweater in your presentation! I’m not a wearer of the woolies, but I might make an exception for DI Jackman’s! I think a lot of us really enjoyed Their Lost Daughters, so I’d say yes, this needs to be auctioned.

    As a matter of fact, I think if you simply glued a picture of RA into a tin you could raise a few bucks.

    • The styling of the shoot is always a special delight for me, I have to say. But a DI Jackman sweater would definitely also be worn by me… Glad if the TLD shrine finds people’s approval and if it is ‘demanded’ for the auctions. Very happy to oblige.

    • Yeah, RA as a figure of authority. Lucas in MI5. Portah in the army. Jackman. Uniforms maketh the man? 😉
      I’m happy if the posts entertain you – I get lots out of the whole shrining thing too. The fun of making them, the pleasure of photographing them, and then the excitement of publishing them.

  12. Spot on! The handsome detective contemplating the many “mystifying” clues of a baffling case. You can almost imagine him thinking “what am I missing?” I really enjoyed this audiobook. This character is the perfect fit for RA’s style of acting and I’d love to see the book turned into a series. I agree with other comments that there will never be too many shrines. I love that every one is unique and has some hidden meaning or subtle cheeky reference. I always look forward to your next unveiling. I hope this one makes it to the auction. ❤️

    • Richard reading TLD really made me imagine Jackman to look like him. I think he would be great as a police detective – and it would be a role he hasn’t played so far. I really do hope the material gets snapped up, and that Joy Ellis would be involved a bit in the casting process. Sounded as if she had made up her mind, too…
      And yes, definitely will put this shrine into the auction now! I’m sometimes surprised myself that there are still new ideas popping up for the shrines. I definitely prefer the ones that are either totally over the top, or that have some cheeky, silly humour in it. If I can pull RA’s leg, I feel less weird about making these shrines in the first place 😉

    I loved Their Lost Daughters, so many plot twists and loose ends satisfyingly tied up by story’s end – it’s up there with my most enjoyed of RA’s narrations 🙂

  15. Perfect use for my favorite tin. I totally agree, I would love to see Jackman come to life with RA playing on the big screen or a series of the novels for TV. I have a perfect place for that little beauty on by book shelf.

    • The top photo was an instant favourite of mine. Classic b/w, of course, but really snazzily edited, too. And very easy to see the pictured man as DI Jackman.

    • Jou. Sind irgendwie auch so zwei verschiedene Sparten von RAPS. Dieser hier ist eher was für Fans des Herrn höchstselbst und ernsthafter. Guy dagegen – naja, so sehr ich ihn anschmachte, er reizt natürlich eher zum Veräppeln. Das würde ich mir bei Herrn A. natürlich niiiiiiie erlauben.

  19. Nice shrine once again, and definitely auctionable! I really like Armitage’s lived-in look that goes so well with the character. I’m surprised you didn’t add the handcuffs to this one too — his looks are arresting! Lol.

  20. Perhaps now that he’s looking a little older, someone may imagine him in that part. I could imagine it going on for several seasons, although British productions are short, just like so many have on PBS once they’ve aired on that side. He did such an awesome job with the book. I think it may be my favorite of his purely on the actual entertainment value of the book.
