Mark Your Calendar – 2018 RA B’Day Auction Dates

Back from my short break, it’s time to get word out of the upcoming birthday season… As I mentioned before, I am using RA’s birthday as an excuse to put on an auction of fan items again, with the proceeds going to a good cause. In order to have auction results ready as a virtual birthday present *on the big day*, I have decided to set the auctions for a duration of three days, starting on

Sunday, 19th of August

As on previous occasions, I suggest to stagger the auctions slightly, beginning late afternoon. That way Europe and (parts of the) US can watch the final moments of the auctions and we will have a final result by the evening of Wednesday, 22nd of August. A proper auction announcement with all the small print will follow closer to the date. But I can already disclose that we have been gifted a number of signed items as well as exciting new fan items for the auctions. There will be programmes, jewellery and shrines, among other things. Many thanks to the donors already. More info coming soon! Mark your calendar, put a few pennies aside, and hopefully we can turn Mr A’s frown upside down. (New picture alert:)

Photographer’s note: There are only very few people who can pull off *that* perspective… Well done, Mr A. And is that a Belstaff jacket, btw?

In other news – my deepest sympathies to those of you whose habitual residence is in the sort of climate that I spent the last eight days in. Munich was oppressively hot at 35°C (95°F). I don’t think I have ever sweated so much in my life. Not even in Croatia or Greece. My friend’s attic flat had a consistent temperature of 31°C (88°F) day *and* night. No breeze – and the fan in her flat merely shifted the hot air. Returning to Ireland was a blessing – and that is me saying that, who usually loves hot weather, precisely because I rarely get it where I live. In any case, going out and about, was a bit of a chore, but myself and daughter managed to tick off at least one sightseeing item every day. I am glad to be back, even though the temperature here is half of what it was in Munich…

PS: Will try and catch up with all the comments over the next few days!

      • That picture!!! THAT PICTURE!!!

And after seeing THAT picture of him, I had to try to dry myself off so I could TEACH!

Lucky us had a FIRE DRILL so I can to stand in the sun and get myself together!!!! (The alternative was watching a movie, which I wouldn’t do.)

          • Like you, I normally don’t like his selfies. This one doesn’t seem to try my patience so much. His grey is showing proudly. I’m NOT fond of the haircut. But that seems to be his character for now.

Long on top, short sides. Nope. I love the Silver Fox temples, but the way shaved short sides with long top… nope.

                    • Arminostrils 😂
Silver Fox definitely suits him. The shaved sides… well, I found myself very strangely (and worryingly) attracted to Trevor in BS2… Not sure what that is. Maybe menopause wreaking havoc with my taste.

                    • I was NOT attracted to the Trevor character one bit. Daniel, on the other hand…. and yes, that included Daniel after Trevor, even with the funky haircut. I found S2 Daniel/Trevor to be rather dark – darker than S1 Daniel. I’m looking forward to S3. I hope they do that backstory right. Meaning NOT what they did to S9 Lucas/John. (As I recall, Richard has said 3 seasons is enough for him for any television show. Don’t ask me where I read it, I just remember it.

                      Back to the grind….

                    • I agree with you I really liked Daniel speaking German w Patricia and Max and Daniel and Esther. I did like how she bossed him around in Season 2 ie “don’t fuck it up” when they met in the back of that supermarket, girl power!! I think hopefully Season 3 will see Patricia back bec in my insomnia mode I was perusing a few weeks ago there was a tweet at Claudia Michaelsen included by Olen Steinhauer and I think he is in the creative Captains chair again this season. Trevor was a pawn that Daniel had to use undercover so I kinda ignored him although he rocked the Army jacket and shades quite well. I think those scenes when he meets w Esther and his tete a tetes with a Hector he’s got the Daniel cap on. To be perfectly honest I think Season 3 will be it for the show exp if EPIX is in some inner turmoil as a cable channel just my gut feeling.

I have a good memory mainly long term and my dreams are recurring primarily good and quite vivid but the bad dreams not w Richard in them or versions of Guy and Marian I remember as well. Those I think stem from stress. I’ve embedded myself w digging for info on Richard for 8 months now so I’m happy he pops up in my dreams for now. I think in all honesty if I wasn’t single w no prospects men wise would I dream so constantly about Richard selfie king and unique bad hat hair and all? 😉🤔😍😛

                    • Trevor was despicable in many ways, fascist that he was. So yeah, not sure what it was… maybe just the taboo of feeling attracted to a bad boy. Daniel didn’t appeal to me because all through season 1 and 2 he remained a vague character. Trevor was much more clearly defined. No excuse though. Fascists are unacceptable!
Oh, I didn’t know that RA said that about TV shows. Makes sense though!

  1. Sorry about the oppressive heat in Munich. I love love love this pic he did today! He looks so rugged and the view is uber cool. As a Newbie here and forgive the dumb question but how does this auction actually work? Do you have to be on SM to participate or is it done thru your blog? By the way looks like Thorin got in a lot of sightseeing too!!!

    • Well, I rarely like his selfies, and this is no exception 😂. The perspective is interesting, as is the b/w, but I am too OCD to let the crooked composition go… And I really dislike selfies in which the subject very obviously tries hard to look cool 😁But I am glad he has so many others’ approval. That’s what counts…
As for the auction process – as I said in my post, the details will be posted next week, but essentially it works the same as in previous auctions:
The auctions will be staggered with a few minutes in between each auction – this is to give me time to process the final bids etc.
I will post a post with descriptions of the items here on my blog once all auctions have been activated ON EBAY! Bidding is via eBay. There will be links to the individual auctions for easy click-through. Alternatively you can also follow the auctions through my seller page on eBay.
I will post updates with current bids over the duration of the auctions (most probably once every day). Highlights and milestones will probably also be communicated over on Twitter where you can find me as @GuyltyPleasure.
The auctions are open to all, items are shipped anywhere in the world, free of charge. Te auctions are a charity fundraiser with all proceeds going to LOROS this year.

      • Thanks so much for the explanation. My take on his pic is that he looks unpolished there-more in the moment (little double chin and all) than those other selfies where he masks (washes out) his wrinkles and blemishes and other imperfections. Those just don’t even look like him in my opinion. I also like his funky hair standing up although I thought it was rather hot in Budapest now or is this in Berlin? So why is he wearing a jacket? I like the Belstaff (??) jacket!! Also is this taken at night or is it just the black and white appearance?

        • The picture is taken in harsh sunlight (see the strongly defined shadow) but it has been put through a b/w filter (“noir” on my iPhone, for instance) which makes the azure blue sky look black.
The picture is a bit grainy, which works in favour of potential blemishes and lines 😉 The funky hair is cute – I just don’t like the perspective. I don’t see a double chin. (If there was one, it would be masked by the beard, anyway – clever man) But I don’t think that the perspective from below does much for *any* face – it literally makes the subject look down upon the viewer, hence I am not really in love with this picture.

          • I wouldn’t even begin to know how to filter it out so he is quite the clever man. Was there a tag where he took it in Budapest? Who do you think he is channeling here- some of Guy? some of Lucas? Not really Daniel here, no?

            • Trust me, Michele, not very difficult, not very clever *blasphemes* 😉.

  2. Oh, and as for the heat – that’s what I grew up with down in middle Georgia in the summer. High heat (95+) and high humidity (95%). And in a house that, at the time, didn’t have central air, just a couple of window units & lots of fans. I learned to sleep in as little as possible to stay cool.

                • Hehe, Michele, I am not sure whether it is really irony… I mean, I obviously like RA – but I have a deep dislike of his selfies. Because they usually interfere with what *I* think my movie boyfriend is like 😁In that sense I am genuinely not impressed by this last photo. However, I’ll concede that it is nice that he has tweeted at all.

                  Like

                  • My take on his selfies is that a lot of them look distorted like he is covering up his natural looks (ie wrinkles, furrow brow, laugh lines) so he doesn’t look like Richard or even remotely like his professional photos which are quite visually stunning (ie The Lost Daughters). That in my opinion defeats the whole purpose of a SELFIE-isn’t it to capture one’s true self in a given environment/setting. I know this goes back to maybe an age issue for him which he frankly just needs to grow up and deal with and he hasn’t even hit 5-0 yet. I guess the pic yesterday just struck me as much more genuine and off the cuff (someone else mentioned like he just rolled out of bed which I think is a wonderful observation) that my senses went into over drive. I am not a fan of his tweeting/pattern to begin with. His pics on Instagram when he is playing tourist or art curator or theatre maven are enlightening to me. I like to guess what he is thinking at the time of the pics instead of a selfie showing off in front of a taxi cab w Berlin Station advertised in the background. Admittedly my attempts at humor in commenting fall short and come across as superficial or snarky sometimes but I’m all about the love here.

                    • I know this will sound condescending, but please don’t take it like that but bear in mind that I was a new fan at some stage, too, and felt very much the same about our object of affection: You being “all about the love” is part of the early fascination with a love interest or an actor. As time has gone on, the shine has rubbed off a bit, and I often feel quite critical about RA. My selfie-hatred is probably based on my own dislike of taking selfies because I find it inherently vain. It’s a topic that has been discussed over and again many times; Servetus has written quite a bit about it (and disagrees with me, iirc). I don’t really believe that selfies are attempts at genuinely true self-portraits. In fact, I think that selfies are even *more* (self-)curated and (self-)censored than portraits taken by a photographer. They merely depict an image, a heavily constructed view of self. And actors who are promoting themselves on social media probably take great care to present themselves attractively. Selfies that are posted on social media are aimed at specific audiences – fans, the media, possibly potential employers/casting agents – and as such I don’t believe they reflect the *real* person. They are made to show the subject as attractive, as a canvas to project on, a vessel for a role, a bankable star. Excluding the few silly pics where RA’s humour shines through (the qumquats (sp?) in his ears; the bacon on his cheeks), his pics are always pretty-pretty. Nice to look at, yes, but devoid of defining characteristics. I believe that the selfies of his pretty face say much less about him than for instance the pictures that his co-star Leland Orser takes and posts. He gives his audience a glimpse into his interests, his whereabouts. All that adds up to a bigger picture.
Having said all that, I totally understand why RA is posting all those selfies. It’s what his fans want with the added bonus that by focussing on his face only, he avoids giving away any context – just perfect for someone so intensely private as RA.

                    • Guylty, not condescending at all and very well written. I totally agree with you on Leland Orser’s IG. I find myself wandering over to his mainly to glimpse what is happening in Budapest/Berlin Station 3 filming updates and he reminds me of a storyteller– he takes his audience on a trip of sorts in his pics plus he is very down to earth in my opinion. The one pic w his wife Jeanne Tripplehorn on her bday in June in S.F. was so touching. I commented on Servetus’ blog last week that I wish Richard would hang out more w/Leland. Yeah it must be very tough to be in Richard’s position and that is an excellent point about a potential audience being casting directors/producers interested in him. I never even thought about that.

          • I’m determined I’m going to find some this fall and make a sheet cake like that — I’m seeing too many pictures of them. We have a plum tree but the plums are so sour they’re inedible, so we leave them for the birds and the deer.

            • I know your pain. Similar here in Ireland – there aren’t really any fruit trees here (except apples) – the sun is just not strong enough for sweet fruit. No cherries, no damsons. Except this year there was a lot of sun. So maybe the damson tree in our park will bear edible fruit. They won’t be big, though – it has been too dry in Ireland for that.
BTW, have you ever tried baking it with your plums and spreading a good bit of sugar on them prior to baking? Might give you the damson taste, even if sweetened with sugar?

              • We have a nearby microclimate that does well with tart cherries (Door County) for a few weeks every June — enough to make WI the 5th largest cherry producer in the U.S., but we don’t have a tree here and I guess the soil isn’t correct for one. Our plum is some kind of special hardy northern variety — they just are really not edible. My mother tried different variations for years and years to try to get us to eat them, but to no avail. With climate change it might be possible for us to try a different tree variety, though, although it’s not even in the top 50 of my things to do. I’ve been thinking in general that I need to plant a few more trees here though.

                Like

                • Oh, yum, you have cherries available in WI? Lucky you! Every time I am in Germany in summer, I make sure I buy some cherries – they are so expensive in Ireland, I never eat them here.
Climate change indeed – not that I welcome it; it’s quite a price to pay for sweet cherries. But having fruit trees in the garden is a wonderful luxury. We have a pear tree in our garden, and in recent years it actually has been producing big and sweet fruit. Might also be an option for you if you like pears?

                  Like

                  • We do have a pear tree — it bears about every third year or so, and they are delicious, but it’s old. They only live about 25 years and it’s on its last legs. We also have two apple trees, and a butternut. The wildlife loves us 🙂

                    Like

                    • Oh, I didn’t realise that they have a limited life-span. (I wonder now who planted our pear tree – I always assumed it had been here for a hundred years.) But hey, maybe that is a good reason to plant a new pear tree then?

                      Like

                    • The ones that seed themselves live longer, but the cultivated varieties have a limited life span unfortunately. I would definitely like to plant some more trees.
