Idea generation is something I am really good at. Following up on ideas – not so much. So before yet another brainwave fizzles out, I’ll quickly bounce this off you: Way back in September, Donna suggested in our conversation about shrines that have gone missing in the post (singular! only one so far, fingers crossed), that we should have a travelling shrine that gets sent around and travels from fan to fan. Somehow that conversation was resurrected by Kate and after further discussion, a new idea developed – a sort of tangible ‘Chinese Whispers’.
This is an idea that I have been part of before
. Ten years ago, a group of internet friends (unrelated to the fandom) and I created a mail chain.The whole thing was to be a bit of a recycling project – not buying new things but passing on objects that we didn’t want anymore but which were otherwise perfectly fine. The first person in the chain packed a package with lots of small but fun items, and sent it to number 2 on the list. Number 2 was allowed to take as many items from the parcel, as long as she replaced them with the same amount of things. And off the parcel went to the next recipient, eventually returning back to the person who had initially sent it off. I came away with a handful of really cute things which I still have (see picture right).
Now, it may be a little bit early yet to mention the C-word, but here’s the question:
Anybody interested in a fandom parcel chain?
With Christmas coming up, it might be fun to organise some little surprises.This is what I envisage: I will pack a parcel with lots of fun little goodies, many of them fan-related, but possibly not all of them. An especially created Guy RAPS, which is to guard the parcel against loss and theft (…) will accompany the package. The recipient of the parcel may take up to 3 items from the parcel but has to replace the same number with items of her choice. Guy is excluded from the swap – he is to continue travelling to the next recipient. And thus the parcel is sent on to recipient #2. The same rules apply to all recipients: take up to 3 items, replace with same number, Guy excluded. There will be nothing precious in the parcel, hand-made things are allowed, fandom-related items are encouraged but not obligatory, and little specialities from our respective countries/places of residence would be an added personal touch. Value of the replacement items is basically up to the individual sender, but since we also have to calculate postage in the total costs, let’s not overstretch ourselves! The postage costs have to be paid by each sender themselves.
This whole parcel chain is only designed to be fun – hence I suggest we do not put anything of massive value in the shipments. I don’t want to end up calculating/comparing values of individual shipments, worry about replacements in case the parcel should go missing along the way, or have people disappointed because they didn’t find anything to their liking in the parcel. This is basically a mixed bag of fun that only serves entertainment purposes – as a way to surprise everyone else down along the chain with some fun little gifts. We are talking stocking fillers here. I would suggest using a random number generator to determine the route of the parcel, i.e. I assign everyone a number and then let the random number generator decide the sequence of the parcel stops. Participation open to anyone, no matter which country, which platform they are usually active on, or whether they are still massively active in the fandom or not (I’m talking to you, CraMERRY! 😉 ) Obviously, you must be willing to let me share your address with the one other person in the chain after you. But otherwise addresses will be kept private.
The actual small print is something we can worry about once I have established that there are actually people interested in taking part in this parcel chain. Ideally, it would be cool to get this on the road soon – depending on the length of the chain some people might even receive it as a “Christmas present”. So, if any of you are interested in doing this, send me an e-mail, to guylty (at) photographer (dot) net and use the subject line TRAVELLING SHRINE. I will take it from there. Deadline for registering interest: 3 days from now (Friday, 16/11/2018). If you have questions, we can discuss them bts or down below in the comments. And just once again for clarification: Your e-mail is not a commitment yet. I will send an e-mail to all interested parties once we have decided to go ahead.

Oh no… I hadn’t noticed the tweet and had to look it up. It’s all very well, but his hashtag is the last thing you should do when you are being bullied. I’m really on board with all his empathy stuff, but there are limits. Sigh.

Wär echt traurig, wenn er wirklich niemanden hätte. Grad Familie und alte Freunde sollten dafür doch eigentlich da sein. Von einigen wenigen Menschen abgesehen, reden die meisten anderen ihm aber wahrscheinlich nach dem Mund. Da besteht dann schon die Gefahr, in bestimmten Bereichen den Kontakt zur Realität zu verlieren.

Ja, privat bestimmt. Aber die werden wohl nicht sein Twitter besprechen. Ich dachte da eher an Presseagenten oder sowas. Aber das ist wohl immer schwierig, dem Chef/Kunden sowas zu sagen.

Ich bin nach wie vor überzeugt, dass RA sein SM selbst macht – und das ohne Beratung. Jeder SM oder PR-Profi wüsste z.B., dass diese Tweet-Löscherei schlecht rüberkommt, genau wie auch das sporadische Tweeten. Der Mann ist ja ansonsten nicht beratungsresistent – man sieht es ja beispielsweise in Sachen Style…

Just to say that I did not mean to belittle your hurt. I completely agree that it was belittling to speak of “silly little jabs”. It just shows how clueless he is. No wonder, he doesn’t really experience SM the way it really is.

No no I know and I didn’t take it negative in any way. I wrote a blog post today for Friday which bumped my previous light hearted one (as lighthearted as I can get w out Pinot Noir or Glenlevet handy😘👏) b/c it really hit me between the eyes how clueless he is sometimes Lovebud and stud muffin that he is to us 😘💗💗 part of me wishes he would read it when I post it to jar him into reality a bit

That hits the nail on the head (pun intended). He doesn’t *experience* SM, he swans in for a moment and then swans out again. He’s untouchable. He has his blue-tick echo chamber around him and can shrug off those “150 characters” (btw, lovey, it’s not 150 characters, it’s never been 150 characters) like that or not even experience them. Not everyone has that luxury.

LOL – the 150 characters made me laugh out loud, too. Shows how little he knows about Twitter. The character limit *used to be* 140 characters, but was doubled a year ago. (Interestingly, by the by, Twitter recently released a study that found that the average tweet (in English) is 35 characters… despite the extended 280 character limit…)
So well said, Kate – “Blue tick echo chamber”. Indeed. That is the “Ivory Tower” that I mentioned in Servetus blog commentary: An isolated view at something that has little to no own experience. I totally believe that he has good intentions, but for someone who preaches linguistic consideration over and over again I find him remarkably uninformed.

Yeah, I know… there’s some truth in it, but I don’t think that good intentions are generally doomed to fail. I am willing to cut him some slack on that because I do think he is genuinely a good guy.

I firmly believe that he is kind and compassionate and has the best intentions. I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t think his was an exceptional person inside and out. There are actors who look like Greek gods carved out of a fine piece of Carrara marble and they leave me absolutely cold because of their grating personalities. He’s not a bad person, but he’s painfully inept at this stuff. That’s what breaks my heart. And again I have to wonder how he gets through four years of it without anyone speaking up. 🤷🏻♀️ Bullying is serious business. He might actually know that first hand. I can’t imagine a 6’3 guy whose chosen career was musical theater got through his teens completely unscathed. So why can’t he see that a tweet of 280 (!) characters can never be an appropriate forum to tackle this subject? You can do this on Twitter. If you know a lot and have thought it through, a thread is an option. A throwaway ‘there, there, just let it go’ isn’t.
I guess what upsets me most is that I really believe he is so much better than those stupid tweets make him look.
Sorry if this is too crabby, I haven’t had my tea yet.

You’re a tea girl! I think he’s lost right now lost without his mum, lost in his own thought process maybe he doesn’t know what to do next maybe he’s down in the dumps. The irony here on Tuesday it was International nice day so all he would had to say is smile at somebody today, say hello to a stranger, do a good deed today. That would have made a world of difference

I don´t know it for sure but I just suppose it was the reason for him tweeting. Yes, the tweet was thoughtless, the hashtag awful but I agree he did it with the best intentions and didn´t want to hurt anyone. It just would be better if he would stop tweeting about things like that and concentrate on taking pictures (sorry Rich, your selfies often look unfavourable but they don´t hurt people´s feelings at least).

Oh no I agree he had well intentions but my beef is with the execution… that he lives now in this bubblewrap where he insulates (Guylty’s great word) himself and doesn’t have a clue what is really happening in the real world. Being bullied by people who know nothing about you and making you feel worthless esp young people cannot be viewed as silly little jabs.. I know we beat this to death yesterday but he is supposed to be an ambassador and has been for awhile and surely he could offer solutions or compassion like I’ve been through bullying too I know how you feel, you are loved! You are special and should stick up for yourself!
I will take the plastic surgery-Ken dollesque selfies any day over this Twitter crap

His communications on this topic have all been rather questionable. So much so that I sometimes wonder what he himself learnt from the bullying he says he was exposed to in his youth.

What upsets me about his good intentions is this bubble attitude like some other people I don’t want to mention-he’s so out of touch w/reality and what really goes on he should talk to Kelly Marie Tran and Millie Bobby Brown and others who have been driven away from Twitter b/c of the bullying that he says to turn the other cheek to. But I’m glad he wears leather jackets and hopefully eats steak tartare and roasted chicken!! Sorry had to throw that in there!!!

Guylty, I have no doubts he is humble and has compassion for other people that is part of my attraction to him beyond his looks and acting prowess.. .that he is bloody honest except the selfie snapperoos. Perhaps that is why this tweet just befuddled me as to the degree of cluelessness and it breaks my heart that I could visually see Kelly taking her fangirl scissors and cutting off after yesterday’s tweet. And Herba too maybe? Hopefully not…

Good point. And the people you mentioned aren’t average kids. They’re actors with a certain amount of power and—in Trans case, maturity—and still they are powerless in the face of online abuse. How much more will this affect a kid who feels like a nobody to begin with?

Ja, die R’s sind dafür bestens geeignet. Ich habe mal gelernt, wie man das rollende R erzeugt: man sagt immer wieder hintereinander Pdinz von Pdeußen, Pdinz von Pdeußen, Pdinz von Pdeußen.
Und wie durch Zauberkraft flutscht das verlorene R aus dem Rachen direkt auf die Zungenspitze 🙂

Genau, Kate. Mir ist “Rhabarber” auch als das Wort bekannt, das man bei Filmaufnahmen verwendet, wenn im Hintergrund allgemeines Reden zu hören sein soll. Funktioniert wirklich.

Meine Spanisch SpraWi-Professorin hatte immer solche kleinen Infos am Rande. Ich glaub wir haben mal ‘ne halbe Stunde mit Rhabarber zugebracht.

Echt? Spielt man dann Rharbarer in Dauerschleife? Kann mir nicht vorstellen, dass das funktioniert. Aber andererseits konzentriert man sich ja auch nicht auf das Hintergrundgemurmel. Funktioniert das nur in Deutsch oder nutzt man z.B. auch rhubarb dafür?

Das murmeln die Statisten, wenn ich das richtig erinnere. Gibt’s glaube ich auch in anderen Sprachen. Ich meine, das wär mal in ‘nem Spanischseminar gefallen. Aber die Professorin ist gern abgeschweift, muss also nicht zwangsläufig Spanisch ‘ruibarbo’ betroffen haben.

Oh, definitely important point. No alcohol of any kind for the USA. They have*no* sense of humor about that. Food would only work IMO if it’s unproblematic for all countries involved or as an extra meant specifically for the next recipient. I might include my famous homemade cherry chocolate chip cookies, but they won’t keep forever, so they would really have to be chosen by whoever I mail it to.

I’m so glad that I’m not the only one who was incredibly upset about his stupid tweet! I got far more worked up about that than the Hannibal con, tbh. I’ve seen some of his comments about having been treated unkindly as a youngster, and god knows I’ve endured my share of bullying, but he is wrong, wrong, wrong with this “turn the other cheek” nonsense, especially as life has evolved over the past 2 years. I’ve written a rather lengthy response of my own, one of my silly little “RL with RA” episodes, that I will post on G’s newest blog entry. I was going to call it “That Darn Tweet,” but with apologies and thanks to Kate, I’ve retitled it “Blue Tick Echo Chamber.” It’s going to take me a while to type it in though, as I have to use my phone rather than a regular keyboard so that I can include emojis.

Oh, this is related in my mind: one of my best friends here in L.A., the mother of my goddaughter, won an Emmy years ago for writing a TV special. The thing is damn heavy! And the wings are really sharp! “We” keep it on a tall bookshelf, especially chosen so that Josie couldn’t get to it when she was a toddler. No spearing the child on the award wings!
