[I’m still battered and bruised from the weekend’s skirmishes, and it all hurts pretty bad, so just a little news piece today. Sorry.]
It’s not a magazine that I am familiar with, but German fashion, beauty and lifestyle magazine Ajouré interviews BS‘s Mina Tander and asks a few questions re. BS. For those interested, I have quickly translated the important paragraphs into English. (No direct mention of RA, though.)
Mina Tander: Germany’s sunshine on cold days
Minus three degrees, ice-blue sky over Berlin and Christmas on the way. What could be better on such a day than to meet Mina Tander, just one day after her birthday !? Mina has been an integral part of German film and television for more than 20 years. She had a busy and successful 2018 and it looks as if 2019 is also going to be successful. We asked her about the new season of “Berlin Station” (…)
The third season of US spy thriller “Berlin Station” started on 5 December on Netflix. You are reprising your role as a hard-hitting agent. What can viewers expect from the new episodes?
Generally speaking, current political events are taking even more of a toll on the Berlin Station agents than in the previous two seasons. They have to learn to deal with it and at the end of the day prevent something like world war 3. As far as my character is concerned, this time the viewers will get to know another side of me. A soft and vulnerable side, so to speak. But not only such – because I am still a tough agent, at least at work.
The makers of “Berlin Station” also wanted you to keep your German accent while speaking English. Why so?
That’s true, originally they wanted me to have a slight German accent. And initially my character was not planned to be there for so long. But when the show runners decided to keep me on, it was important to them to keep my accent as subtle as possible. American audiences identify best with consistent characters, or rather: they are better for “latching on” to. If a character with a strong accent pops up suddenly, then they appear to isolated. I understand that accents should always remain subtle when you are talking recurring characters, so that the character can be understood easily, but I also think that accents are really charming, and personally I do not feel distracted by accents
Berlin is increasingly used as the location for major films from around the world. What do you think makes Berlin so attractive for US shows?
To be unsentimental about it – it’s the financial subsidies. We shot the new season in Hungary and surroundings and I realised that the German crew working for the Americans, was the best crew I have ever worked with. I also believe that the Americans appreciate how good our crews are. But apart from these rational reasons, I also believe that Berlin is simply an interesting location – for young people, older people, also for German and international artists and films. And then there is that mix of current politics and history. Berlin also has this “unfinished-ness” which many are interested in. The colleagues with whom I shot, love Berlin. They also liked Budapest, but they really mourned the loss of our capital. For the previous season, my colleagues spent a full six months in Berlin, and even after a short time there they had already found a larger number of trendy stores than I do after living in Berlin for 15 years. They somehow found out and just knew everything. The insider shops, the best bars, the coolest locations. It was incredible.
The nice thing about the last season and the upcoming one is that real friendships have actually been forged, because we were working together for the third year in a row and spent a lot of time together on the set. And friendships like these keep you going beyond the end of a series and that’s something very beautiful.
I have to say I really like Ms Tander from how she comes across in this interview. And I am glad that the showrunners decided to make Esther a recurring character. She definitely added something to the show.
Thanks for translating. Hope you feel better about it all soon.

Guylty, I totally agree with you on Mina. I really like her as a person and as an actress although …I won’t poke that bear.. I didn’t know she was based in Berlin, I thought since she was from Koln, that would be home base. Is her sister also based in Berlin? I won’t go into Ep 3 although I know you aren’t going to watch it (I sort of wish you would so we could chat about some of the other things going on beyond Danny MIA/dead) but Esther only has 1 scene in Ep 3 and I think it is a throwaway…
I second Sue’s thank you for the translation and forget about the rubbish Tweet that happened on Friday, not worth your time and energy. just shows people’s true colors and why would you want to “follow” people you can’t trust or are nasty… life’s too short for that, yeah know!! We love you here and you know who your real friends are…

Not quite sure where Mina is based. In the interview she definitely makes it out as if she lives in Berlin. But I also remember her posting something about flying back and forth between Budapest and Cologne. Maybe she was filming in Cologne this summer?
Don’t worry re. the latest shitstorm. I am not angry anymore, just incredulous because I didn’t expect this to happen. No more recriminations. It’s my own problem if I am such a mimosa. Let’s move forward from this.

Oh, the mimosa is a tree, the leaves of which are sensitive to touch. If you come to close to the tree, it will fold up its leaves. So “being a mimosa” – “oversensitive”.

24 days. No cigarettes. But I can’t tell you how difficult I find it. I received a lovely package this morning from squirrel, and she had kindly sent me the official help brochures for people who want to quit smoking. In French, but I was able to get the gist of it. And I cried and cried because I realised that I have been labouring so hard at this quitting thing, and I needed help, but I didn’t know where to ask… Don’t worry, it’s getting better every day, but it really is just a “from one day to the next” kind of thing, and apart from my online friends, no one is supporting my efforts or even commenting on them. I feel rather despondent and depressed about it all. Not least because I hate self-pity *LOL*

Listen its not self -pity the quitting anything that has been a part of your life for 25 years is gonna be hard! Not to mention having a partner that still smokes. Maybe it’s a blessing that your children aren’t commenting and you just keep on plunging along because 24 days is amazing and much better than 14 days or 10 days or 2 days. From one mimosa to another don’t beat yourself up over this. Be proud of the 24 days, cry when you need to cry, bottling emotions up is far worse believe me! Forget all the other rubbish going on and enjoy your RA Advent Calendar, Flat Richie adventures, Stephen Jones’ play, packages in the mail, LoLo Land Productions contributions, Tumblr read caps, and Richie’s take on Cmas pudding with lots of alcohol (yummy except the beef stuff) it IS a “one day at a time thing” but the end result is worth it for your health. Have a cup of tea on me!!!

Thank you Michele, your encouragement is really lovely and very helpful. I have to remind myself every day that it is just one day at a time, yet that the days without nasty smoke and nicotine will accumulate. I can’t really say that I feel healthier or better yet. I haven’t noticed my senses of smell or taste becoming better, which is a bit disappointing. But I have reached a point now where I have worked so hard to resist the temptation, that I do not want to ruin the achievement by smoking even just a single fag.
I just wish I had planned my quitting a bit better, and organised some help and some literature to motivate me along the way.

Trust yourself that you are over half way through the journey and BASK in the accomplishment of 25 days not the real life lack of support. Find the support here and online and through your friends that come visit you…they are just as REAL as anybody living with you. I have heard that before from other UK quitters. I had a check for the Irish equivalent to the NHS, but unfortunately their offerings are crap. I want support a month into my journey, yet all they seem to provide is group chats in order to begin the task of quitting. And even then those support groups only meet once a week, and only if you have asked for an appointment beforehand. Sounds as if their service is just the most basic, cursory service – in order to claim that they support quitters.

Well, it sounds quite bad Michele. Nothing to take lightly. So whatever the problem is, I hope you can solve it and do something against the eardache afterwards. Don´t forget to take care of yourself after all.

As for Rauchschluss: Jou, keine explizite Unterstützung von irgendwem.

Well, I am still not on twitter so I don’t know what you are talking about, but obviously whatever it was hurtful. I am glad you have bounced back to your perky smoke-free self. My sister quit with the help of nicotine gum, but I wouldn’t recommend it, she has been addicted to it for years, and it’s expensive.

You are wise to continue staying away from Twitter. Although the annoying behaviour extends from Twitter to other platforms, too.
Have never contemplated gum or patches tbh. It feels as if I have a handle on the physical addiction but mentally I am really struggling with it all. Feeling a bit overwhelmed tbh. And worried about Christmas and being so stressed out that I won’t stay off the cigarettes.

I know what you mean. I don’t smoke but my stress makes me eat everything in sight. I am wasting money on WW while I stuff my face with Christmas candy or chips and dip at a party
At this point I am very well educated on all the things I should not be eating..so every bite is accompanied by guilt. Oh well, maybe I can get a grip after new year.

The guilt is a massive problem for me, too. And it was one of the reasons why I wanted to stop smoking. I felt guilty every time I smoked. Now I don’t feel guilty about smoking anymore. But I feel guilty about having replaced smoking with snacking *LOL*

I hate that guilt thing. (And I am just thinking that I am beginning to wonder why I chose this name for myself and my blog. Ugh. The name is somehow very telling. Forever guilty…)

Herba, Mina has a daughter too. She had a pic up on her IG account yesterday (I was looking to see if Richard had wished her a happy Bday on Dec 4) and she had mentioned her daughter!

Could you set up your own support group by running an ad on Craig’s List? Or on that meetup site that existed years ago which I can’t remember the name of? I suggest you run an advert with a totally honest description so it will attract women with your same agenda, such as “Do any other middle-aged women who have been off cigarettes 25 days or more want to get together and bitch about how hard it is and how their families/husbands don’t help at all?” Then when the group meets and says, “So what are we going to do when we’re not smoking?” you say, very innocently, “I know a 4-hour BBC mini series we could watch….” I predict you will end up with a two-fer: A non-smoking support group of RA fans! Wouldn’t that be fun?!

LOL – now, that is a great idea. But no, I am actually not willing to share him in my RL. If anyone wants to discover him, I am delighted to meet new fans – but on their own effort 😉
BTW, I had signed up for the support by the Irish quit help yesterday. I obviously had to backdate the start of my quit journey, but today I received the first support e-mail. I nearly laughed out loud. Pathetic service, I have to say. This is it:
“Hello, S____
27 days
Did you know there is a real person at the other end of this email address so if you do want to reply Sean, Francesca or one of the other advisors will get back to you.
Good luck, The HSE Quit Team
DAYS SMOKE FREE: 27
MONEY SAVED: €50
CIGARETTES NOT SMOKED: 540”
Wow, what an amazing motivation e-mail. NOT.

Seems a bit …cold to me? Robotic almost… I will say that yesterday on Amazon I had a friendly chat with Pooja b/c one item of my Flat Richie prez has not arrived and I was tracking it and got frustrated. She not only is sending a new one but will it arrive tomorrow. She was kind, courteous apologized profusely for the delay and wished me a Happy Holiday!!

Oh Michele, customer service in the US sounds paradisiac to me! And the attitude and approach is right: Paying customers need to be listened to and treated with respect. No such thing here. I thought this e-mail was really poor.

Guylty, she was really nice. I had battle gear on esp since I feel rotten and she just said what I needed to hear and problem solved for me esp since this item I’m excited about for Flat Richie. My other item from the UK finally came in on Monday !!!! I had been badgering the mailman for three weeks about it so I showed him what it was…

Good stuff. And you know, I expect customer service people to be professional and to do everything they can to solve the issue. Good for you that it all went without hitch.
Oh – BTW, Flat Richie has arrived at stop #3.
