In Defense of the Comment Section

Good morning! I’ve got another mixed bag for you… That’s what happens when I haven’t got the time to get my thoughts onto paper… Which is actually a good sign, in a way – it means that I have been busy with work the last few days. Last week I had two clients contact me out of the blue. Their work terms are acceptable, the work is easy, although not really that satisfying, but well, who said that work should be a pleasure for mind and soul, eh? Anyway, they pay my hourly rate, and that is what counts! Anyway, today I wanted to bring you a couple of arguments for reading the comment section of social media posts. Maybe that is your modus operandi anyway: when you read a blog post, and before you comment, you may already read through all the comments that have been left before you. Well, only when that is actually humanly possible. There *are* after all some platforms where popular content creators receive thousands of comments. And no, I personally wouldn’t read through 1,000 comments on a Youtube clip by my favourite junk journal crafter… And then you might find interesting bits like this:

Thanks to Michele for pointing out Richard’s comment!

Sweet! Richard loves Mina. And expresses that low-key in the comments. Including a heart emoji! Aw!!! And I was particularly tickled because the comment directly in front of Richard’s was mine. Talk about the most tenuous of links 😂…

But it’s not just celebrity accounts were cool things happen in the comments. Over here, in our own little RA-centric blog world, we have some proper gems hiding in the comment sections. And when we discussed the possible contributions of individual fans, Kathy’s wonderful odes came up. I actually don’t know how long she has been contributing them. Kathy doesn’t keep a proper record of them, either, she says, but she has written about 130 of them, over time! That’s pretty amazing, isn’t it? And what is even better, that a joke that started in the comments (see right, click to enlarge) was quickly taken up by other readers – and it now looks as if Kathy will have professional support by Besotted who can help her put her odes into book format! I don’t know about you, but I would definitely like to have a book of odes by Kathy…

So, to make the compilation process easier, I am putting as many RA odes supplied by Kathy to this blog into a gallery. Enjoy guys, these are still as funny as upon first reading!!!

I suspect there are more on my blog. And there are also more on me+richard, so do check over there, too. In any case, a massive thank you and hugs to Kathy for entertaining us with your brilliant odes. That is definitely a contribution to our fandom that deserves a private reading with Mr A – or actually, how about we get him to make an audio book out of them? I’d happily buy that 👂🏻porn…

  1. Kathy Jones is a talented woman, I enjoy her odes, but had no idea there were so many! Excellent idea to collect them all in one book, 📕📗📘📙 or several, as needed. 😊

  2. Another here who’d like to see
    Kathy’s Odes, entomed for posterity.
    With kudos to Guylty, obviously
    For illustrating them so delightfully.

  3. Nice collection you’ve put together for Kathy’s Odes! I’ve bookmarked the post for further study of both the odes and the pictures! Even better if they become a book!

    • Hm, very very vague feeling of familiarity… but no idea what it really was about…
I myself was involved in two fan book initiatives over the years. Back in the tumblr days we made a fan book for him and sent it to him (2012) and then in 2014 KellyDS and I organised a Hobbit farewell fan book for him, too. Needless to say both those fan books were never acknowledged.

  4. Kathy’s Odes are brilliantly funny and clever. I think they would even give RA a hearty chuckle to read them. I had no idea there are 130 of these and I agree that a book would be fantastic. (Especially when reading between the lines reveals some bonus eye candy) I liked Michele’s comment about the odes being like shrines ❤️ And Guylty, how cool is that for his comment to follow yours? Perfect timing on his part 😉

    • Hehe, no, he was a day late! So at least I can claim that I was more attentive to Mina than he is *haha*. And anyway, my comment won’t have meant anything to him – I deliberately wrote it in German because it was all for Mina and not for the people who follow her or any other obscure actors who might have had the privilege of being supporting actors to her *khehehehehe*

  5. Wow you guys. I am overwhelmed by all your compliments. I thank each and every one of you for your encouragement about a compilation of my humble odes. I cannot call it a book. That would be way too intimidating. I will start getting them together. They are strewn through a few years, not always illustrated, but hopefully funny.
