Armitage Weekly Round-up 2019/17

Hello everyone and apologies for a week of silence. As you know, I was travelling last week. We returned from our tour of West Cork on Wednesday, but as usual, the impressions needed to settle before I was ready to blog again. The weekly round-up is the perfect opportunity and occasion to get back into the swing, so rest assured, you are getting your daily dose of Armitage goodies today. But before that, a quick word about the last week.

Horseshoe Bay, Sherkin Island

Cork City (and Co. Cork) were my first encounter with Ireland when I was 14 and on a 4-week language holiday many, many years ago. Back then, Ireland was a different country, economically depressed, very little industry, high rates of unemployment. The poorhouse of Europe, actually. In many way, however, it was even more beautiful than it is now – the landscape has stayed the same, but there are more houses now, and people have less time to stop and chat than they did back then… Nevertheless, my eyes were overwhelmed on my trip. I took many photos, and I definitely think that West Cork is up there with Connemara – and yes, even with New Zealand. For those of you who enjoy my photos of Ireland, I have put together a little slide show in this post. In case you are interested in the itinerary: We drove from Dublin via Cork City to Roscarbery on the South coast of Ireland. After the first night in Roscarbery we spent 2 nights in Baltimore from where we took a boat to Sherkin Island for a day trip. Moving on towards Bantry, we stopped to take a boat to Hare Island. We also went all the way to the Southernmost point of Ireland, Mizen Head. In Bantry we stayed in the beautifully situated Bantry House, home of the Earls of Bantry. On our last day we visited the stunning garden on Garinish Island near Glengarriff and then drove back up North, breaking the journey for an overnighter in Thurles.

  1. *sigh* such beautiful photos of Ireland! Thankyou! And many thanks too for the link love. The cold wintry blast we’ve had here this week meant being indoors so I spent more time than usual at the computer.

    #4 I reckon it’s the cut of Guy’s jacket that makes his backside look prominent. I really like the S3 costumes, but I think those of S1 and S2 showed off his “physique” better 😉
    #7 the behind the scenes interviews are from the Strike Back DVD extras. I couldn’t find them on YT, let me know if you’d like the video footage sent to you.

    • Glad you liked the Ireland trip. Were you down in the South on your travels through Ireland?
      #4 – yeah, probably the jacket rather than the arsitage… And yes, the big chest was much better show-cased in the biker leather from S1 and 2
      I had a look for Strike Back on YT but yeah, as you say, nothing there… So if I may…

      • We spent a bit of time in the south after travelling down the west coast – five nights in Dingle, four in Kenmare, but we only cut across through Cork on the way to Kilkenny where we stayed for a couple of nights before heading back up to Dublin. We covered a lot of territory in a month, but without making it rushed. Most places we stayed at were for 2-5 nights. I have family ancestry in Cavan and Lietrim so they were on the itinerary right from the start.
        (👍 We’re heading away again on Wednesday so will aim to send off to you before then. )

  2. Beautiful, beautiful shots of Ireland. Must get down south of of these days. I went to a Divine Comedy gig years ago in a castle somewhere near Cork but can’t remember the name of it…

    Some lovely sets in the roundup! #1… definitely the best look. Hmm Thorin… I rather like the top right pic with the fierce eyebrows! #12 is lovely and #16 is so funny 😂

  3. I agree with Mezz and Helen, the photos are beautiful. The blue of the sky in some of fhem is just unbelievable.

    #2 l’ve imagined Guy in many a situation, but never as a cook. Now I’m seeing him at the stove in a frilly apron and … Well, I blame those innuendoes from #16 for *that* particular mental picture.

    Lots of other lovely stuff to brighten my weekend. Great roundup, thsnk you, Guylty.

    Some of those alternate Thorin incarnations were a little bit Jesus.

    Since I’m not familiar with Cats at all, I don’t get it, but the runaway train of thought made me chuckle.

    He makes everything look good—nape curls, gray temples or a mullet. As one of the descriptions on one post said, he’s „disgustingly handsome“ and that’s the way we like him.

  5. Wonderful Ireland pictures. Hopefully one day I’ll make it over there. (I went when I was around 10, but not since then.)

    Great Roundup. Lots of nice compilations. I really like the Porter black and white and colour. And the innuendos. I dint think I’ve seen all those Thorin looks before. They definitely chose wisely.

      • I love your sepia tinted image of RA in the role of John Thornton. He looks like he belongs to that mid-Victorian era with his costume top hat, frock coat and the ‘infamous’ cravat! (One of my guilty pleasures!)
        It’s a gorgeous picture of his profile too; have you thought about tweeting your image to him?

        • Oh, thank you, Zigzag. Glad you like it. It really worked out well. The costume obviously helps.
          And no, I wasn’t going to tweet it at him – I am rather defeatist when it comes to doing things like that. He never acknowledges or recognises fan art anyway, so I feel embarrassed to tweet something that simply fizzles out in the ether of the internet…
