Here’s the Rest of the Uncle Vanya Cast

I woke up to great news this morning – thanks to Herba. She had spotted the cast announcements for UV. HERE is her post. The Twitter account for UV followed up with a tweet, too.

Why so overjoyed? Because… Ciaran Hinds. Yeah, fellow Irishman and all. But really: Capt Wentworth.

Persuasion has always been my favourite Austen book, and when the BBC produced film was released in cinema in 1995, Hinds really hit the mark as the dark, broody – and helplessly romantic Captain Wentworth. He’s been on my radar ever since, not least because of fellow blogger Linnetmoss. Her blog has gone really quiet these days, but she is a massive fan of Hinds’ and I had the privilege of meeting her when she came to Dublin to see Hinds on stage. (Here’s hoping for a repeat of that encounter on the occasion of UV in London!!! I’m looking at you, Linnet!)

In fact, Hinds is the only other actor I have ever deviated to for a shrine

“You pierce my soul”

If you haven’t seen Persuasion, SPOILERS 👇🏻

“I can listen no longer in silence. I must speak to you by such means as are within my reach. You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope. Tell me not that I am too late, that such precious feelings are gone for ever. I offer myself to you again with a heart even more your own than when you almost broke it, eight years and a half ago. Dare not say that man forgets sooner than woman, that his love has an earlier death. I have loved none but you. Unjust I may have been, weak and resentful I have been, but never inconstant. You alone have brought me to Bath. For you alone, I think and plan. Have you not seen this? Can you fail to have understood my wishes? I had not waited even these ten days, could I have read your feelings, as I think you must have penetrated mine. I can hardly write. I am every instant hearing something which overpowers me. You sink your voice, but I can distinguish the tones of that voice when they would be lost on others. Too good, too excellent creature! You do us justice, indeed. You do believe that there is true attachment and constancy among men. Believe it to be most fervent, most undeviating, in F. W.

“I must go, uncertain of my fate; but I shall return hither, or follow your party, as soon as possible. A word, a look, will be enough to decide whether I enter your father’s house this evening or never.”

Wow – really, really looking forward to seeing that play on stage next year, now.

  1. Ohhh! I love that movie! Hinds is a great Wentworth, and Persuasion is also my favourite Austen’s book. And I have a soft spot for Toby Jones too… omg, what a cast!
And what a wonderful shrine… the letter scene… swoon

    • The cast is getting better and better. Or well – now it is complete and it is great.
The letter scene was just like a kick in the gut – in the best sense, actually. I always loved Anne Elliott as a character, too – quiet, altruistic, rational. That she gets the man in the end, is just so satisfying.
I think I am going to scrap whatever I was going to do today. I *need* a Persuasion rewatch. Now.

  2. I too am so stoked for this!! 🙂 🙂 I even made an “Anne with an E” fan video featuring that letter a week or two ago that he read in the BBC adaptation. Have you ever seen him in “Miss Pettigrew lives for a day”? Supporting role but totally worth it! 🙂

I so hope he’ll do the stage door…

    • Afaik Hinds and McPherson have some sort of creative partnership, in that Hinds has played in many of McPherson’s films and plays.
Anna Calder-Marshall is Tom Burke’s mother, I just found out…

  3. Ciaran Hinds is awesome! Miss Pettigrew for sure but I loved him in The Mayor of Casterbridge (love me some Thomas Hardy!)

I’m thinking I have to do some serious saving and maybe take a birthday trip in the spring! Eeeeee!

    • I think you definitely should. No Xmas presents, just a contribution to a trip across the sea to London, please. (I think that’s what I am going to ask for, too.)

  4. This looks like a great additional cast. I’m only familiar with some of their work: Rosalind (Harlots) Ciaran (GOT, The Terror season 1) Peter (P&P, The Paradise) but they were all excellent.
I’ve only seen Persuasion with Rupert Penry-Jones but now I’m curious to see the CH version.

  5. Ciaran Hinds?!?! Swooning competition, for sure. How will we choose whom to look at when they are in the same scene??? (Just kidding.) Does Hinds do stage doors, does anyone know? So many questions, I have!!! This is exciting news.

    • Does the Harold Pinter have a SD ? I have been to the Globe many times but never the SD , once when I looked around the back/ side there appeared a door but it seems well out of reach of the public !
I have tickets for this first week and I am considering getting a ticket for later on but my friends are not that keen, I suppose I could do a matinee ( I am not very keen to be in London on my own in Winter at night ) I remember how The Crucible changed, I saw that three times but only one SD which left me with very mixed emotions.

      • It does indeed. It’s just on the side of the building. During the London run of ‘Betrayal’, Hiddleston frequently did the SD and delighted his fans, so I think there is access to the SD.
I agree the SD is actually more fun when with friends…

        • Even though I rushed outside at the end of the performance we were 3/4 down the queue and I think Richard was exhausted by the time he got to us , I got my programme signed but when I asked for a photograph he said ‘ where’s the camera ? I turned to indicate my daughter but he moved off and the girls next to us got all the photos!!
In our hotel room J showed me the photos she had managed to get and there was a nice one of his feet while he signed and an awful one of me looking scared as he loomed over my shoulder eek.

          • Ah, thank you. It´s a pity that you didn´t get the pictures you wanted. But at least you have pic with him even though totally different than expected. Anyway, that sounds as if you should definetely give the SD another try now!
Sounds as if you already have to rush out to the SD while the applause is still going on to get a good spot in the queue.

  6. Aw Guylty, how could I have missed this? It just goes to show that there is a cost to spending too much time on Twitter and not enough on my first love, WP! Your shrine is a wonderful tribute not only to Mr. Hinds but to fan friendship!
