It was regrettable that it all blew up like this. I just hope that there are not fans *on the other side* who bought con tickets on a false premise.
In Mrs Bennett’s words, it’s all very vexing!
I hope I’m not too out of line that I’m feeling a little irritated with our beautiful man. Even though he is perfect in every way (hahahahaha), for me, he could have, and should have, anticipated this kerfuffle and dealt with it from the outset. Granted, he seems to live with his lovely head in the clouds most of the time, but surely he had to know how much his appearance would be/was being touted, and that it would cause great concern for people who have already shelled out a lot of money for UV tickets. Oh well. Easy enough for me to whinge from where I am, way back on the sidelines. Maybe he thought that people whose actual job is publicity would be competent enough to work out the details without him having to get involved beyond showing up for work and handing round everyone’s 10% of his income. I also feel badly for Hobbitons who may have pounced and immediately bought tickets on the quasi-assurance from the con operators that their beloved Thorin would be in attendance, but now they are getting news that he will *try* to there one of the three days. (No, LoLo isn’t cranky and hungry and in pain…why do you ask?)
No, not out of line at all. You’ve voiced your criticism in a respectful way, so all good.
Ad res – I have to agree that the whole issue has not been handled in an ideal way. At this point, my assumption is that the con organisers (or maybe only their tweet-person) jumped the gun in their excitement to have him on board. I actually fully understand that. However, I think they did not handle the fall-out very professionally. At least in terms of tone and message to the fans – who had legitimate concerns. And that applies both to the theatre goers as well as the con attendants. Smug replies along the lines of “even actors get weekends off” are not helpful.
Switching off the APM for a moment, I also have to say that I would have hoped that RA could’ve reacted a little earlier. After all he was online last night to RT his latest Castlevania action figure – did he not see that there were questions as to his participation?
I mean, ultimately it is all faulty communication imo. Between RA (or his management) and Magiccon, as well as Magiccon with public. Which then descended in recriminations and accusations elsewhere. I was glad that RA Bulgaria patiently and politely continued asking – and got a result that provides clarity. I take it that RA is going to honour his theatre commitments on 17 and 18 April, and will attempt to spend the whole Sunday in Bonn. I find that a very good, if not Solomonic solution.
Hmm…looking back over some of the tweets from the con organisers, I’m shocked by how much they seemed to be speaking on his behalf, like when they said that there would be multiple weekends during which he would not be appearing in UV. Very bad show on their part, very bad. I’d be surprised if our beautiful man gets involved with them again.
Yep, I was not particularly impressed with their communications. However, I kind of understand how it happened: Once they had drummed up all that suspense with their mystery tweets over 24 hours, they could not back down. And maybe they simply had the wrong info on their desk?
I’m more concerned, however, that they have *still* not reacted to RA’s statement – 3 hours after he tweeted. While the theatre goers are placated, it now may be the con attendants who need some reassurance. Not ideal, any of this.
That was exactly my impression. They sounded like his PR people. And he/his people/the theater let the conversation get away from them.
People can debate whether it was his “job” or his “duty” to say something until they’re blue in the face. (And man has their been APM at work, sheesh!!) But when people or organizations take it upon themselves to speak for you and you don‘t intervene (which he could‘ve done BTS by telling MagicCon to cool their jets), the fallout comes to you. You have to set the record straight one way or another or you‘ll have egg on your face. It‘s just the way it is.
Yes, it makes me wonder if Magicon said he was appearing for the whole time to sell more tickets. They must have known that he had performances – after all, they knew all about him! I’m glad our lovely man put them in their place
Finally he tweeted. I wonder why there isn’t a performance on Thursday 16th April. Now I feel sorry for folks expecting to see Thorin on Friday and Saturday, what a mess
Not ideal, the whole thing. But well, where there is people, there is the potential for a mess. Just hoping that a solution is found that will make all stakeholders happy.
super pleased for any fans who had booked tickets that weekend. I certainly don’t blame him in all this-that’s down to his agents or the con or some silly miscommunication. But not really acceptable in any instance.
In this particular instance I am fully behind *all* the fans, both for theatre and con. If they both get what they want, then that’s fine.
I think LoLo and Kate have a point re. reclaiming the conversation when someone entirely speaks for you and misrepresents the facts – as seems to have happened. Sure, it was not his doing, but somehow he was the only one to actually get the facts straight. I’m glad RA stepped up to the plate.
I’ve discovered the advantage of not being able to attend either the play or the Con is that I haven’t lost any sleep over this debacle!
So, it’s gone from his attendance apparently every day according to the impression given by the organisers, to he’ll try getting there for one (Sunday). If I were him I’d be unhappy that those who are paid to do their job properly have not done so.
Rereading this it looks like I’m being dismissive but that’s not my intention at all. I would be devastated if I’d booked to see Richard at either event and missed out. I feel for those caught up in this mess.
Same here, Mezz – the fact that I can’t attend either way, meant I wasn’t overly invested *myself*. But even watching from the sidelines it wasn’t really a nice spectacle to see… And somehow so unnecessary. I’m just surprised that such misunderstandings (?) can happen.
Dear all, please note that we are aware of the clash of dates. We have a signed contract (otherwise we wouldn't have ever announced him) and we are in contact with the agent. Please give us all some time to sort things out. Thank you!
Jou.
It does – but somehow there must have been a misunderstanding somewhere along the way. Especially as I would expect that RA signed his contracts for the theatre before he agreed to do the con? Well, maybe we’ll find out…
Hi Guylty,
Happy blog anniversary! I’ve been out of the loop for ages with RA related news, but my friend who is big into the Tolkien Cons messaged me about RA’s attendance at this (before the dates clash became apparent). He knows one of the organisers who is dealing with this. I’ll see if he can clarify how long ago the contract for the three day attendance was drawn up. I have a suspicion it may have been quite a while ago, as in another communication, the organiser had stated they had been working with Richard’s US agent for a long time to secure his attendance. Still, there may be a loophole.
I would be utterly devastated if I’d organised to fly over to one of these events only to find he wasn’t appearing, and I feel so terribly sorry for the people who might be disadvantaged. (I read that a man had bought tickets to the play on one of those dates as a surprise birthday present).
Hi Jenny – no worries, the whole schedule clash issue seems to be worked on bts. Even RA himself got involved, by the look of things.
I heard about people having bought tickets on those particular dates for birthday presents, too, and what a disappointment it would be if one of the leads would not be there. LIkewise – after selling tickets for the con, how disappointing would the fans be if the man didn’t turn up there, either. I really hope they can work this out..
Many, many thanks! *relieved*

I can’t read what has been said, but all the comments about contracts from Magicon looks very serious.
