2020 Armitage Weekly Round-up #7

The great thing about missing a round-up? That is catching up with double the fun the next week! Hello and sorry for the radio silence. You know me… once out of step, Guylty finds it hard to commit to coming back. Commitment issues, yeah right. Having said that – the reason I didn’t post last weekend was a short break in Germany with all the family on the occasion of my mother’s 70th birthday. As is the custom in (Northern) Germany, it was a big affair, but semi-formal this time, as it was not an evening dinner but a lunchtime, sit-down meal of a traditional local winter dish. We started off with a little walk to my dad’s ginkgo tree where all participants (half the invited guests are older than my mum and not necessarily avid walkers anymore) were greeted with a traditional schnapps. From there it was back to the restaurant for the meal with coffee and cake in the afternoon and finally one for the road at about 7pm. It was great fun, and even though I realise that our local speciality does not look particularly attractive on the plate – plus, I won’t even tell you what it is called; its name sounds worse than it already looks – it was delicious and brought back many memories.

Look, Adam is already grumpy because I have waffled about non-RA stuff…

Right, 30 items? Got to be a new record here!? And I haven’t even delved in the other tags apart from #richardarmitage. Yep, as I said, sometimes it is actually a good thing when I miss a week.

Hope you have enjoyed that. Quick shout-out to everyone who has commented in the last while. I will catch up, soon, also with my e-mails. Apologies for my lack of replying. Yeah, I admit I was lazy. But then I was also completely distracted the last couple of days because RAnet had suddenly developed a major hiccup: For most of Thursday and Friday the site was stuck on a round-about. Well, or in tech terms: it was endlessly redirecting, which meant the site was not accessible. Added to the problem was that for some reason my login details suddenly did not work anymore and I was unable to re-set my password. It took several hours on live chat with my hoster’s support team to sort out the issue. But it *has* been sorted, the site is up and running again. Phew.

We all deserve a nice long weekend now!

    • We totally overdosed on meat that weekend and have been eating vegetarian since then… It’s really quite heavy and fatty food – no finesse in Northern Germany 😉. But yeah, I love sausages, too.
      Agree, I think RA and Finneran together would make a believable Jackman/Evans duo. And it would also fit in terms of “ageing” the two characters a little bit…

Wonderful collection! #24 – I’m not even wild about kids, or Daddy Armitage, but those boys were just so lovely! #28 is swoonworthy ❤️ And I completely agree re RA and Siobhan Finneran as Jackman and Marie. Perfect casting. I’m in the middle of The Patient Man at the moment and my heart is in my mouth! 😳

    Love, love, love #9. It’s an important thing to keep in mind for me re the Sally-Adam shipping I’ve seen. I personally can’t with that. I just can’t. Been there, done that (with an ex) and by god, I should’ve burned all his t-shirts.
    All of riepu’s gifs and edits are beautiful again. All the kisses to her! Same goes for mezz. You ladies make me very, very happy.

    #24 I don’t have a thing for daddy!Armitage like some people (no judgement, just never happened for me), but I thought the parent-child interactions in The Stranger were great. He was really believable and I am a soft heart, so I loved it.
    #29 I am a Jackman-Marie shipper. I can’t help it. It probably wouldn’t work, but my heart wants what it wants. I am all for an Armitage/Finneran collaboration in the future. They had great chemistry.

      # 9 I am usually an “anything goes” type of person, and I actually do not really mind *any* shipping pairings. However, when it is done in comparison with another female character and there is an underlying misogynist undercurrent of “Corinne was not as hot as Sally” to it, it really irks me. Strangely enough, I actually felt sympathy for Sally. (We’ve discussed this before, but for the benefit of other readers:) Her reaction after Adam asks whether she reacted to Corinne’s questions with ‘but you told her it was nothing’, was telling. And in that sense I would not wish on her that she’d even consider getting back with Adam.
      # 24 I am a daddy!Armitage fan – merely because I find it relatable. Also because I think it is a type of role/scenario that he hasn’t explored much in his career. He’s always the childless, family-less loner spy etc.

      • I totally agree with the misogyny in some of the comments I’ve read. God forbid a man is actually with an attractive (!) woman his own age and not one ten years younger who had one scene where her assets were deliberately played up (no offense to CA, but the costuming was no accident).
        And yeah, that wasn’t exactly a scene that should endear Adam to any woman, even if it was aesthetically pleasing taken out of context. He very efficiently crushed two women’s feelings for his own pleasure.

            I mean, CA is actually ten years younger than RA. And I cannot shake the feeling that this particular storyline was made for the male gaze (female director notwithstanding). Sort of like “Look how hot she is. Can you *really* blame him?”
            I read somewhere that Chrissie should get no sympathy for getting shot and having her girlfriend killed because she caused all of it and I couldn’t help but think if Adam hadn’t cheated, Corinne wouldn’t have felt threatened, she wouldn’t faked the pregnancy and there would have been no secret. 💁🏻‍♀️

            • Oh, I couldn’t agree more with you!!! Adam definitely has a good bit of guilt on his hands. Corinne’s secret was caused by *his* secret. In that sense, I thought that the show didn’t really put Adam’s part in the whole tragedy into perspective.
              And I think you are spot-on when it comes to the figurative ‘male gaze’. Sally was supposed to be irresistible; never mind the otherwise established and happy family life… I thought it was actually weird that Adam didn’t *immediately* think of his own secret when Corinne said to him he was also carrying a secret around… It was only when he much later looked through her phone, that he realised she knew. Typical.

                • Me, I am very bad at that kind of thing.
                  Adam was very self centred he left a lot of home life to Corinne, he later realised she had left a note on the fridge about the Dad’s versus the boys at football , he didn’t give a thought to the washing after Corinne’s disappeared. LOL
                  The business of the street demolition took too much of his time .
                  The real catalyst imo was the Con man/Pastor who set the policeman loose, I don’t think that piece carried enough importance but in hindsight I can see the point Jennifer Saunders made about her daughter/ and her role being central to the story.

              • i think it was conveyed in the book much more -his guilt and responsibility for what happened. For not trusting Corrine, for the affair, for neglecting his family.
                TBF, i think Carmilla Arfewedson is pretty irresistible if you’re male or female.
                I don’t think Adam comes across well in that scene (which i believe is deliberate), including Sally who is pretty disgusted with his attitude towards how she dealt with Corrines call to her.

                • Ah, I see. Yeah, I guess a book is always better at explaining the background or the internal workings of the characters’ minds. Mind you, I think they could’ve done that better.
                  Oh, and no criticism of CA at all – definitely a very very attractive woman. But hey, I have met some very very attractive men while I have been married – and NOT started an affair with them 😉

                  • oh i didn’t think you were criticising CA and i certainly wasn’t suggesting her beauty is why he started the affair-again the book shows it’s him lapping up attention because he somehow thinks he’s lacking it at home…7 yr itch kinda thing. No, my comment really should have been in reply to Kates comment about the scene being designed for the male gaze- i think she and the scene are incredibly appealing to both sexes.

                    • I understood Kate’s comment as more about the fact that it was created *with* a male perspective in mind – which unfortunately in our world is still so prevalent that many women inadvertently have internalised that kind of perspective. As in “ah well, it’s perfectly understandable why he cheated on his wife with *this* irresistibly hot woman. I mean, who could help themselves against the attractiveness of this woman” 😉
                      It’s a really interesting discussion, though – how much compassion do we have for Adam, for Corinne – and for Sally. And more interestingly: WHO do the *makers of the show* want us to sympathise with??? That’s where the cookie crumbles – *I* think they want us to have most compassion with Adam, whose “guilt” is somewhat being played down (in the show) by making Sally so attractive, i.e. irresistible, that he is “absolved” or at the very least sympathised with for having strayed…

                    • i don’t know, Sally seemed pretty disgusted with his attitude because she seemed to think they could have had a future together and Adams view on their relationship was that it was a fling. It’s a shame they didn’t focus on his responsibility for Corinne’s actions more.

                    • Agree. (I think I said something along those lines elsewhere, too.) I guess my point here is that while we are finally shown Adam’s secret (and hence his part in Corinne’s deception), the fact that his former lover is such an extraordinarily attractive woman, works almost as an excuse for his infidelity. As in “he just couldn’t help it” and “who wouldn’t?”. Sally’s own pain in the whole affair is only given a tiny glimpse.

                    • ah, see maybe i’m seeing it from my view when i read the book which is more about him feeling neglected in his relationship with Corinne which is why he sought solace elsewhere-but that’s basically him ignoring the fact that she works hard and looks after the house and kids. I never really noticed the point you have made when i watched the scene-but tbh i’ve only watched it twice. Maybe requires another viewing

                    • Tbh, it wasn’t as if that was what I thought when I saw the scene for the first time. I was busy processing what was being revealed. I did notice Sally’s reaction to the “you told her it was nothing, right?”, though, and kind of felt her pain at that.
                      Looks like anyone who has read the book, may have an advantage – or a different view of Adam, because you know more than what the show reveals to the viewers.
                      BTW – *definitely* requires another viewing. And totally for the plot. And the plot 😉

    • LOL, you know, I was actually thinking of you as I wrote this. We did talk about this before, many years ago, I think. So yeah, you know what it is like – and whether it is an acquired taste or not 😉
      Yep, the Fachwerk is lovely. Now that I live far away from my home, I actually appreciate the visible remnants of history so much more.
      And goodness me, 120… you know, she might even reach it. Her granny reached 98, her mother 96… who knows, with further advances in medicine???

  6. I really want to see My Zoe and also The Lodge even though horror is definitely not my cup of tea. Unfortunately neither of them is coming to the cinemas in here. I’ve already preorder The Lodge DVD and maybe it’s better to watch that way.

  7. Thankyou for the mentions in your roundup! The Stranger is certainly the gift that keeps on giving when it comes to lots of lovely closeups and giffable scenes of Adam. I love seeing Paula’s gif sets scroll up on my dash 😊
    Re #9, so much was conveyed in so few frames, proof that less can be more when it comes to sensuality. It was interesting on a second viewing to revisit that bar scene when Adam meets Sally (as with so many other plot threads) knowing what Adam’s secret was.
    I am definitely in the Armitage/Finneran as Jackman/Evans camp, now that I have seen them onscreen together.

    • Oh yes, TS will provide us with many hours of fun, thanks to the giffing talents of you and Riepu and others. I am very grateful :-).
      The bar scene and interspersed sex scene is really interesting in itself. There is a whole story there that I find extremely compelling, especially once you leave the male gaze behind and just look at Sally as a woman. Adam really doesn’t come out well in that scene… The sex scene was really elegantly done; as a female viewer, I really loved it. Sensual in a subtle way and without boobs and too much skin. Your own imagination fills the gap – and that is so much sexier than full frontal nudity.

No I’m not a daddy-Armitage fan – and he is doing more of these roles – .’Childless, family-less loner spy’ is what I like best. Glad the RAnet gremlins have been sorted.

    • Thank you x. That dish is called “Kohl und Pinkel” – which could be translated into “cale and pee”. (As a matter of fact, it has got nothing to do with pee but that particular German word is an old-fashioned expression for something that is “stuffed”…)
      “Adam the Adonis” LOL – love it. And in some ways you are right – the family-less loner pigeonhole is definitely more rewarding in terms of Kopfkino…

  9. Thanks for the bumper roundup, Guylty and belated many happy returns to your mum. I’ve never seen such a gorgeous array of sausages – that single carved radish looked a wee bit lonely though. 😂

    Thanks for the spoiler warnings – I duly averted my eyes but not long enough not to wish Wardrobe had run to a pair of pyjamas for our Mr. Price – bad for his health in the winter months ☃️ and my blood pressure.

    Oh, and whoever invented baseball caps needs … well, I suppose I’d better say a good talking to.

    • Hahaha, yes, that radish was seriously out of place. Not pictured in the photo were the other main ingredients of the dish – kale and potatoes. Classic winter meal, with kale growing in the winter, and fatty meats providing the energy to brave harsh Northern temperatures.
      Those baseball caps are just an abomination.
