2020 Armitage Weekly Round-up #29

A mid-day round-up today because I went to the recycling yard with Mr Guylty this morning, followed by a lovely walk and a (take-away) coffee. We had to dump our collected recycling – and of course what happens is that Sonja picks up new rubbish while at the recycling yard 😂.

Someone had thrown out this tray table. It’s in working order (although screws need to be tightened) but looks in bad nick. Judging by the green stains, it must have been kept outside. So this afternoon will probably be spent sanding and painting the table, possibly with a bit of decoupage thrown in. Not sure yet what I will do with the frames that I picked up. I’ll probably give them a coat of paint, too, and turn them into chalkboards or trays or picture frames. We’ll see.

Yesterday I had a long conversation with my daughter about the baffling Audible tweet campaign. I am still trying to get to the bottom of it all, and it seems as if my suspicions may be right: I may simply be too old for this shit. 😂 Little Miss Guylty explained to me that supersimple picture edits where only one word (often seemingly context-less) is edited onto a picture, are a big thing for young people on social media. She wasn’t necessarily aware of such edits with *names*, but otherwise she seemed to imply that there is some sort of humour implied in such edits. *coughs* Ooooookayyyyyyy?! She was pretty scathing, however, about “companies that try to appear young, but always look stupid doing so”. Neither Little Miss nor I are experts in this, but yeah, it looks to me as if this was intended for a younger target audience. Again, scathingly, Little Miss maintained that “no one in her generation knows Armitage anyway”, so it looks a bit like a complete fail to me. However, I have also learnt something else: My lightness of fangirling is missing if I am continuously trying to make sense of stuff. Maybe *she revolutionarily ponders* there is no point to this at all, except silly, senseless fun? Maybe I should just enjoy the photos and disregard any words? Maybe there is no “why”, just a “this”?

Well, fwiw, I still quite like the pictures. Skinny or not, I totally like that hairstyle on RA, I love the rolled-up sleeves, and the leather wristbands. And the shrubbery actually looks quite cool on him there. It helps that the example picture above has been cleaned off the name; thank you to Mezz from whom I snaffled this image.

But it’s a fun exercise. Do you agree(disagree? Where and which character? And maybe we should do something like that in blog world, too?

Thirteen, lucky number.

Before I go, here’s a little 2020 RA Birthday Auctions update: I spent all afternoon yesterday photographing and noting down the sizes and defining characteristics of the auction items.

Yep, another one of those deliberately obscure item photos… Carpet not included in auctions, btw 😂

As I have hinted before, we are looking at a bigger auction than ever. I had actually sworn to myself that I would not ever have as big an auction as the last time – to avoid stress when the auctions close and some winners expect *immediate* notifications by e-mail and/or explanation how to proceed further. But with the heap of donations that have come in since last year, plus a massive number of creative contributions in the last couple of months, as well as the need to auction off the Flat Richie left-overs, I am looking at a 40-auctions-fundraiser 😱. Nah, not to worry, it’s ok. It’s my own choice – because I want to scale down the “auction item stash”. But just to say there’ll be plenty of items, and across a range of prices… And I look forward to it! With the majority of photography done, I will no proceed to preparing the descriptions and texts.

As for a little job interview update: Well, the recruiter had said to me prior to the interview that I would hear back the next day (i.e. Friday). The interviewers themselves said that it would be within the week. My own experience tells me that a company that *definitely* wants a candidate, would’ve made up their mind within 24hrs. So *hooray* it looks as if I will be free a little longer 😉.

  2. I’m always going to stand for — as I have been for a decade now — that it’s okay to be serious about fandom and one’s reactions to it. I’m not going to delegitimate other people’s choices to pass over stuff when that is their actual reaction, but it’s also equally okay to say “I hate these photos and here’s why this was a stupid choice.” I really thought the battle against “over analyzing” had ended and it was okay for people to react how we react. If it’s not okay to take fandom and its creations seriously, I’ve got no reason to blog — or comment.

    • You are absolutely right – it is ok to react whichever way people react. It’s *their* reaction, and I have no issue with lightness nor with seriousness. That’s why I said that *I* felt my lightness was missing. – I actually think that it is equally valid to blog in light way, as it is in a more serious way. Again, personal style of being a fan blogger.

      • I think at the end of the day the point is which way of fangirling makes YOU (or me or Tom, Dick or Harry) happy. Because that’s the point for me. I don’t begrudge anyone their way, but sometimes I sit out a particular discussion because something was just two minutes of fun for me while it greatly annoys someone else. If others want to dissect it, that‘s okay, but if that makes me cranky, I’ll step back.
        I think I’m mostly #TeamLightheartedFun because life is stressful enough. Not that he doesn’t rile me up every so often (good to get my blood pressure up?) and I fly off the handle, but other stuff (like the latest Audible efforts) I just shrug off.

        • Yeah, at the moment I am trying to claw back my earlier fangirling days. They were fun, yet serious in their own way. Even with serious and in-depth discussions going on, it felt slightly more lighthearted. Probably because I still had a crush on RA. That’s gone, and that won’t come back, but in the absence of it, I have to make this as fun for me as possible.

  6. No criticism of you, as they didn’t credit, but ummm… no 3 is actually giffed by me unless they happened to use the exact same part of that scene and (unusual) font.

    See my blog post about how this gesture came to pass. I don’t usually bother with gifs as there are so many talented gif-artists in the fandom, but I can if I’m motivated and I was for this story. They even used #livingdangerously as one of the hashtags which is the last sentence of my story:

    “Just so you know, I am keeping this one for the blooper reel,” Mark warned as Jen handed Richard the box with the questions for the video.

    “Suit yourself,” Richard shrugged. “I like to live dangerously.”

      • Right, finally updated.
        It’s really awkward when people repost stuff without proper credit. It’s impossible for me to keep up with the original posters of edits etc, and I simply have to believe that what I see is made by who is posting. Meh.

  9. Great round-up! I love #4 but have to say that John Mulligan ranks much higher on *my* list (although I found the episode of this show – whatever it was – “unwatchable” because it was so embarrassing and filmed worse than some handheld amateur vid…so thanks to whoever made the only-Armitage-scenes-cut I found on YouTube) – but then again the author of the tumblr post didn’t include the picture in the restaurant (I’ll just say *the fork* – I guess you all know which one I mean ;-)) so maybe if he’d found this picture instead, the ranking would have been higher anyway… I admire the decision-making and reasoning though 😉 I find it very hard indeed to decide on a definite ranking: For me Porter is number one and then quite a few characters ex aequo in second place: John Proctor, Trevor/ Daniel Miller, Ricky Deeming, Lucas North, Chop and Mr. Thornton – I’d give them all silver medals 😉 and because this fantasy world works that way and not how it’s really done in sports, I’d hand one bronze medal each to Angus from Macbeth (btw: Is there any way to see this 1999-Macbeth? I only know the pictures) and to John Mulligan. There, now you all know 😛

    • It’s odd about Moving On because they’re written by highly regarded screenwriter Jimmy McGovern ( of Cracker fame) . Maybe it’s because this series was written for afternoon tv that the quality was pretty crap?

    • You can really tell that the “Moving On” episode is a good few years old. It certainly looks less polished and smooth than current TV. All a bit drab and dreary. It didn’t help that I felt very little sympathy with the female character…
      But yeah, the ranking was great fun. Definitely something that I might try, too. I am pretty sure it would come out differently. I was majorly surprised to see the surly and despicable William Chatford so high up in the ranking *haha*. That moustache alone was worth delegation 😉

      • i think some of the point with the Moving On stories is that they’re not simplistic daytime fodder-so not feeling sympathetic towards the characters is spot on the premise , i found an interview with McGovern as the series celebrated 10 Years in 2019 and this quote is useful
        “Jimmy McGovern, the series’ creator, says: “For over a decade, Moving On has brought authentic and thought-provoking drama to a daytime audience, utilising the talents of both A-list actors and new and established writers and directors to tell stories concerning extraordinary moments in ordinary people’s lives.”

    • All the four frames are real wood. Haven’t done anything with them yet, but the table is now ready for distressing. And then I’ll probably decoupage it a bit.
      Yep, the auction number is impressive *eeeek*

    And 40 items?? I hope I will get myself something this year. I was planning to make something for the auction, but with my nieces here constantly, that was mission impossible. 😀

    • The tray has received an undercoat and two top coats so far. After doing the replies here, I will work on it this afternoon. Needs some distressing and possibly some decoupaging. I’ll take some photos 🙂
      Fingers crossed that you are lucky this year. With 40 auctions that is hopefully possible. And don’t worry about not contributing an item – you have done more than your share in the past! x

  13. Miss Guylty’s theory could well be right and RA himself does seem to be after young audiences.
    1) Drldboer is one of my absolute favourite screenshotters, “Save, save, oh I’ll save that too, and that , oh and that …”
    4) I think I’ve found my RA soulmate! I didn’t agree with all nazghoulz’s rankings – RA certainly Should Not be contractually obliged to wear a beard in all roles (if he isn’t already) his magnificent jawline should have a preservation order stamped on it – but his dislike of non-threatening Armitage or bland, yes!  Great turn of phrase and the remarks about the stylists were interesting too. I like the idea of this as a blog challenge, I could do with some inspiration.
    8) Reipu has caught one of my all-time favourite looks from RA  – the times I’ve re-played that searing look to his right – ohh!

    • Drldboer is definitely great at summarising the scenes. And it’s always a pleasure to see the pretty pictures, too.
      LOL, I couldn’t agree with you more on the nazghoul rankings – and the contract terms that should be imposed. Monet and Chatford were criminal!!! I wouldn’t completely discount non-threatening Armitage – while Harry Kennedy is definitely not my favourite chaRActer, I did enjoy the smiles.
      Still no job news. I think, in this case that means that the job is not mine. (And I am actually relieved. I wasn’t looking forward to telling them that I wanted more money…)

  14. #10 I’m watching Hannibal from the first episode, with much more gusto than I expected – too much gusto, probably. So: enjoy the butts, yes. Gross, no. The show is morbid, unrealistic, aesthetic, annoying, romantic, kinky, creepy, cringe, meló, but not gross.
    A lot of blood, betrayal and languid gazes. I just started the third season and I can’t wait to see RA

    • i was shocked at first by the gore, but it never feels unnecessary as such and it’s done in such a beautiful way that it’s horrifying but no horrific. It’s weird. It took me a while to get used to it but i’m glad i stuck with it. I actually watched it before I got into Richard, and as a previous fan of the Hannibal stories and films-I actually felt Richard provided the best portrayal of Dolerhyde i’ve seen

    • Ooh, well done on watching the whole shebang, Lurkerella. I never saw the first two seasons of the show, and I have to say that I felt rather squeamish about some of the Hannibal scenes in season 3. But I loved the aesthetics of the show, and I understood what they were trying to do. RA really fit perfectly into it.

      • The first season is similar to CSI, becoming creepier in a quiet way – and there’s rom-com vibes, too. It’s the more traditional season, but still not mainstream. Slowly the show sinks into madness along with the characters, deeper and deeper, so we feel sick and scared like them. We are driven to surrender to this flamboyante lack of common sense.
        This is my design.

  17. Aww sweet about recycling, that table looks so cute and will look even better with a refresh. Glad they let people pick stuff up in recycling 🙂
    I went huh on the name stuff on the pics ; i saw that and had no clue what they meant, why would people put their name there? Anyway photos are cute, i like the fact that the shirts look worn and he looks animated. Though he was on the thin side in there, but yeah still nice to see new pics, I think my favourite audible ones are of Jackman on the fens 🙂
    Good thing me learn new things from little miss, and here i was looking at tick tock and thinking i was keeping up with the times, duuuh 🙂
