RA Pocket Shrine 226/? – Mini Boo 👻

Are you a Halloween fan? I confess, it has never been big in my house. It simply wasn’t part of German folklore when I was growing up, and I was somewhat resistant to the cultural import from the US later on when it became bigger. In Ireland it is pretty big, though, and even though today is the day before Halloween, I thought I’d post a little mini boo. Even as a Halloween ignorant, I feel so sorry for the kids in Ireland who have to forego the traditional trick and treating – it has been cancelled this year due to the pandemic. Maybe that is why I felt compelled to make a mini shrine.

Goodness, you have no idea how long I have hoarded this little tin. Seriously, it’s been in my stash for several years, always waiting for the day I would use it. Well, today was the spontaneous occasion… It’s a tiny tin, just 4 x 5.5 cm… So there wasn’t that much space for elaborate shrine scenarios… Only this:

Well – *boo* 😉. Just a bit of recycling of old Halloween selfies. Do you think he will post another one this year? Maybe not, seeing that we are all cooped up wherever we are.

So that’s it – a mini boo, just for fun. I leave you with Mr Armitage, also practicing Halloween moves. He’s gonna catch you!!!!

  9. We (yanks)love 🎃 . We used to trick or treat with pillowcases because they could hold the most candy. Then you would go home with your friends, spread out your loot on the floor and trade candy with each other. Two snickers for one mounds bar for example. Most dreaded treats- apples and home made popcorn balls. Dentist’s house would give out toothbrushes. 😩

    • Toothbrushes? Seriously??? What pedantic bores! My most active trick or treating years were when my family lived on the outer-most, almost rural, street of a small city. There were only about 10 houses on the street, which would take more than two hours to cover, in a climate that was always quite cold in late October. I would head out with a gigantic supermarket bag and visions of coming home with it FULL — which would have been 20 pounds of candy, seriously, a ridiculous notion. I would come home with my 10 pieces making one layer in the bottom of the bag (1/2 pound, max). So disappointing. Life was rough in the 1960s.

      • Now I live in an apartment building in a giant city. There’s a 7-year-old on my floor. I just walked down the adequately heated hall at 2 a.m. to put a surprise bag of treats on her family’s door knob. Life is easier when YOU are in your 60s ha ha ha!

        • That is such a lovely idea, Besotted. That little girl will be so thrilled. I feel very sorry for the Irish kids this year – no trick or treating. But people here have been inventive, too. My friend sent me a picture of their front garden yesterday. They put a table in their front yard with lanterns, pumpkins, decorations, a big bowl of sweeties and a big sign: “Trick-or-Treat-Station”. That way the neighbouring kids can come round an receive a little treat. Nice.

    • LOL – oh yes, those PC people who take all the fun out of a candy day like Helloween 😂. Poor kids. I mean, granted, all that candy is bad for teeth, but it’s ONE day in the year where they are allowed to collect all those sweets. Hmph.

  10. I love it! And he can bite me anytime. 😏
    I’ll be working Halloween and we can’t really dress up in costumes for it. But I shall be wearing my spider pin on my shoulder. And I have a face mask with spiderwebs on it to match.

    • Hope you had a quiet day at work, at least? We never have any trick-and-treaters at our door because we live in a business area, so all I saw of Halloween was the (illegal) fireworks in the evening…

      • No, not a quiet day. The store I work in is close (literally right down the street) from a college so all the college kids were in. Plus they had drive-thru trick-or-treating for the kids in the community. Plus we had a delivery truck show up & the gremlins played mischief with our registers.

  12. I have seen more houses decorated for Halloween this year but I think the idea is a ‘ trail’ so children are driven? or walked around but no one knocks on doors
    According to the BBC,England will be locked down for a month from as early as Monday
    I wish it would work but I think it’s just delusional and shows they have run out of other plans

    • That sounds like a compromise that’s doable – still give the kids a bit of fun while maintaining some physical distance.
      I think the 2nd lockdown was unavoidable. The 2nd wave is coming. But I definitely notice that people over here are not observing the lockdown as strictly as they did in March/April. Back then people were scared – and stayed at home. Now everybody is much more blasé…

  14. Is there a Halloween equivalent to Scrooge? That’s me, not into it all, despite it getting bigger in Australia every year thanks to the heavy marketing, but this shrine is cute!

  15. Fangastic shrine Guylty! Although his hooded pic gives me the heebie-jeebies. Halloween was never very big when I was young and I didn’t like the commercialisation from America. My poor son wasn’t allowed to trick or treat. We all love it now, decorations, spooky music, eeries films, pumpkin soup ( which I don’t even like but still want to have). All perfect for an old goth!

    • I was very anti-Halloween, too, when I still lived in Germany. It really is not part of German traditional culture at all, and I resisted the commercialised “artificiality” of it – in the German context. Where I live in Ireland, I get away with ignoring Halloween because we have no neighbours and there is literally ZERO trick or treating here. Much to the dismay of my kids. They used to spend Halloween with their cousins – so that they could go trick-or-treating with them in the suburban residential estates…
      (I actually put together a last minute Halloween table decoration last night – no idea what possessed me…)

    Halloween has always been my favorite holiday and I hate to admit I once again forgot my anniversary this year, dispute being reminded in writing by friends. 🤎 Halloween 🎃 however, is a holiday I’ve never forgotten. 👻 As city kids, my brother and I would literally run from 🏠 house 🏡 to house with a pillowcase each trying are best to fill it with candy. (Something our parents never bought us.) We usually gathered a pretty good horde every year and then we’d try to eat as much of it as we could when we got home _before_ being forced to go to bed with said horde clutched in our little savage fists. 🍬🍭🎃

    I left for university when I was 17 but still went trick-or-treating until I was 18. (2nd yr there.) One would think I would feel too old but no I didn’t.

    When I married, we started giving comics out to trick-or-treaters along with candy. 🧡👻🌻Which we still do and did last night. Although there weren’t many kids out last night and it wrapped up early. So we didn’t run out of anything. 😕 Still, I love this time of year. Including Day of the 💀 Dead. 🖤 Sigh, 💀good times. 🎃

    • Hehe, I guess I was pandering to my audience, Mimi, creating something that will appeal to Halloween fans like yourself 😉
      Sounds as if you had lots of fun with the holiday as a child. And that’s absolutely as it should be. It’s part and parcel of US folklore, so it definitely has a place there. I think my issue is more that in Germany it definitely is not part of any tradition, and it feels as if it found its way in because it is yet another holiday that can be used commercially. (A bit like Valentine’s Day, which is also not a traditional German holiday, but has been pushed by the card-producing industry to make more sales.)
