The Man from Rome Trailer Is Here!!!!

[Not sure whether a trailer needs a spoiler warning? But just in case…]

And it looks fast-paced and exciting. The book did not read half as breathless and fast as the trailer. Here is the link – hopefully you can see the trailer there, as it somehow is set on private and won’t embed on blog.

In case it didn’t work for you, here are a few quick screen shots I took for you.

There is more in the trailer, these are just a few quick glimpses. A Vatican Bond, indeed, by the looks of it. (Didn’t strike me quite as hands-on in the book, but never mind.)

Richard has already tweeted that he is not going to watch the film…

Having been non-plussed about a “priest film” so far, I have to admit I feel a frisson of excitement watching this… And no, not because of the press-ups! 🤪

  1. And he’s shirtless. As a priest!! LMBehindO. So much for no more chestitage. I think we need a shirtlessness index of the Armitage oeuvre. 😂

  2. Am I just more exhausted than I think, or is he speaking with an American accent? It’s difficult to tell because there’s far more dialogue from everyone else than there is from him. The character’s not an American in the book, right? I could swear that it’s not RA’s usual Brit voice though; sounds much more like Daniel Miller. But yes, dad bod, my arse!

  3. a lot of actors don’t watch their own work but I don’t think that’s something you should freely admit in response to a promotion tweet unless asked :/ having said that, this looks much more exciting than I was expecting!

    • Yep, even though understandable, there’s a hint of dismissiveness in that kind of statement. I know he doesn’t mean it like that, but to me it just sounds quite abrupt (especially because he stated it without any context). I was surprised as well how “thriller” it looked. The book just simply did not thrill me at all…

  4. It looks great, just up my street. I wonder when it will be out. And ooh, RA is good-looking! He does sound American, which is unexpected. As for the press-ups, Topov strikes again!

  5. I didn’t love the book when I read it but the trailer looks exciting. So I guess Richard won’t go to any premiere if it comes out at cinemas? I wonder if it will be at cinemas in all Europe or just in Spain. I guess it’s one of those movies that would be great on the big screen. And WOW, no way anybody can call THAT a dadbod… Must be still working out regularly and it definitely pays off 😉

    • The “dad bod” quip is really coming back to haunt him 😂.
I felt the same about the book. This is just the trailer, so who knows whether the finished product will keep the promise, but so far it looks interesting…

  6. RA has groused about taking his kit off for as long as I’ve followed him. He said he was happy when he turned 50 because he would no longer be asked to strip down. Well, here he is, and I don’t hear much complaining from him. Methinks the gentleman doth protest too much. 😉

  7. A perfect melange of Trevor Price and Robert Langdon (from ‘Illuminati’).
And, yes, a hot priest, indeed. Although, I cannot imagine a barechested clergyman with a gun at all. But I haven’t read the book.

Not my cup of tea. I’d love to see him in a period piece again. He’d be so great in it.

    • I like thrillers, I like action – but not really a priest action thriller…
I’d always be on for a nice period piece. It’s been ages since he has done one…

      • Fingers and toes crossed he gets a gig in The Gilded Age. Something different, maybe a Pinkerton working for George Russell. I want to see some period-drama beard action.

        • I had to look up The Gilded Age. So, Julian Fellowes is weaving his magic for US history. Sounds good. The only caveat is that I wouldn’t like RA in a period drama with an American accent. So if they can please cast him as a British guy, that would be perfect 😉

          • I wasn’t sure who saw it around here. I was hooked and kept thinking if he goes back to a period piece, it has to be something different for him,

  8. Looks great. I mean the trailer 😊. Thanks for the screen shots. I must admit that I have not read the book.
Haha, not because of the press-ups. And this is supposed to be a credible confession. I’m afraid no one will believe this.

    • Opinion about the book is divided. And I get the impression that all those who read the Spanish original, liked it, whereas people who read the English translation were rather nonplussed. I belong to the latter group. And then add to that that I just can’t really sympathise with a priest very much… But ok, open mind. Hope we get to see more in the run up to the release.

      • Here the book has the title „The last battle of the Templar Knight“. Also far from the original. So by mistake it was also bought by people interested in the Templarorder 😂 But they liked Quart too. The opinions about the book are divided. For some, the dialogues and descriptions are too long, so maybe it’s not a language issue. Some write that the book is more about existential than criminal issue. I’ll wait for the movie. We don’t have to sympathise with the character he is playing and maybe he is playing a villain. Well, I admit I sympathise, at least a little, with any villain he plays 😂. Richard and Sevilla are enough to see it.

        • 😂 Oh dear, I feel sorry for all amateur historians who bought this book thinking they’d get some crusade history…
I personally just found the book really slow-going. I can’t even say whether it had long dialogues or descriptions, it just didn’t flow very well for me. Maybe I am just not compatible with Spanish literature – I also found it a slow slog to get through “Shadow of the Wind”.
Richard’s villains always have a tiny spark of redemption in it, so no problem with villainous characters. But no, I just have an issue with priests who are painted as heroes, hence my reluctance to engage with this one.

      • The language and the translator can make a huge difference.
As I don’t understand Spanish and neither a German nor an English version were available I ordered the book in French. But I still have to wait some more days for the delivery.

  9. Why am I not surprised that RA has doffed his shirt playing a priest this time! Not that I am complaining! 😉 I think he tends to protest too much. Fact is, he could have kept his top on doing press ups. Looks like RA has definitely dropped a few pounds and is probably sucking his stomach in. It’s enough to inspire me to practice doing press ups!
Will the movie be shown in cinemas or on Netflix?
I have enjoyed watching RA’s Harlan Coben stuff, mainly because I think the supporting cast has been good, and the stories have been enjoyable romps. However, they do not stand up to plausibility scrutiny. As a result, I have not re-watched them, not even to ogle at RA.
I hope The Man from Rome is not in the same category as the Harlan Coben series.

    • I am wondering whether it is written in his contracts that he *must* take his top off 😂. (Question is, *who* insisted on that clause in the contract? The actor or the producers? 😉)
I agree, he looks a bit leaner in this.
I think the film is meant as a theatrical release, but I have also heard that Amazon Prime is among the producers, so that would point towards a general release on the streaming platform soon after.
I am not a massive fan of the Coben thrillers, either. They are binge-y, but only because they have been edited to be so fast-paced, that you forget about the plot holes. Hopefully this piece is a bit more plausible.

  10. oh no, I missed it…. and I love watching trailers…
he looks great in the pics, but every time I see the dog collar, I do a double take… hot RA and priest in one person is totally messing with my mind like two magnetic opposites. I went to a Catholic school and definitely no remotely good looking priests anywhere in real life 😉 also while most were of the slightly endearing (but “weltfremd” – cannot find a fitting translation) mindset, two teachers/ preachers were of the kind who would take the bible word for word plus very homophobic etc – fanatics who should have no place whatsoever in a school! 🤬 I am curious how this will influence how I see the film, when it is released!

I completely feel you on the issue of priest and hot… and I didn’t even attend a Catholic school. What you are describing confirms my prejudices. That is not to say that there aren’t cool and decent priests. But well, it just makes it harder to find the chaRActer lovable, RA or not…

      • thank you so much for the link! it worked and I think it looks great overall. until the first cut to the logo of the company Palatin its almost exclusively RA? almost too good to be true, especially with 😎 but as others here in the comments have guessed: this definitely seems like it was taylored to appeal to fans and leaked “accidentally”-purposely to get some buzz! anyway, it looks like I might enjoy the film after all! beautiful locations too! (even though they probably had exactly the same shot sequence of Alcazar palace in game of thrones already – at least it looks very familiar to me 😉)

        • Glad the link worked for you, Anja. I really hope the trailer is not promising more than the film can hold. RA front and centre would be great for a change.
